Changing my timing belt; Does this look right?

So I replaced my serpentine belt and apparently I put it on too tight cause when I went to crank it and the engine turned over, the timing belt snapped. So I got a new timing belt and put it on with the help of the "timing belt replacement guide" thread. I don't know if it's right though because my timing marks didn't want to align on the camshaft pulley. When I rotated the pulley, it would spin past the mark before it would stop. I got it to sit with the marks aligned to put the belt on, but it wasn't "locked in" if that makes sense. Here's pics of what it looks like now with the belt on. Is this right?

Sure looks right to me. :hmm

Be sure to confirm timing marks by 2+ clockwise rotations of the cam shaft. That means 4 rotations of the crank shaft. :news

Let the tensioner spring do it's job, and you'll be fine. :thumb

Torque everything done and drive. :drivin

Ok sweet thanks!! Also how do I know how tight to make the serpentine belt? Did the timing belt snap because I made the serpentine too tight?

Timing belts break for 3 reasons.

1. Poor quality timing belt. I have seen a 120,000 mile OEM timing belt from a 1991 still intact and working. Loose, but working.
2. Rubbing on the timing cover. New ones for 1989 - 1995 are available from GM.
3. Worn out timing idler bearing. You did replace the idler bearing, didn't you?

One more reason

Just because they are just plain wore out. Even a good quality timing belt will only last so long.

No I didn't. :( I still can though, that's the one on the tensioner pulley right? Can i just get one at autozone? I just don't understand why it broke right after I put the new serpentine belt on tho. :hmm

The bearing should feel smooth and even a little gentle drag from the grease and seal. If not, replace.
As above, FSM says rotate the crank by hand/ratchet 2 (or 4) times, with the idler tensioner slightly loose. Then tighten the nuts/screws. The spring provides the proper tension for the system.

The timing belt tensioner/bearing are one in the same thing. :news Good idea to install a new one. ^o) Then you know the age of both the belt and components. :hmm

Like Glenn said, the tensioner fails and there goes the belt again. :die

Then we get to buy Another belt, plus the tensioner, and do the whole darn thing again. :gamerz :banghead :gamerz :shake

She's alive!!! There seems to be a little more shake in the engine tho, but it sounds pretty normal. Is there a specific noise it would make if the timing was off or something else was bad wrong? And thanks for all the help guys!!

Stone coincidence.

If the belt is off a tooth the engine should run poorly. It'll just have no power until it really gets to spinning, or it will run good, but smoke and get bad mileage.
