I just got done rebuilding my head on a 1997 geo metro 1.0 and i replaced all the valves and valve seats and did a leak down test with the cam out and there was no leak and then i installed the cam and i noticed that all the valves had gaps now.I tried to rotate the cam in diffident position but the would not close. Is that normal if not how can i fix that. |

Did you disassemble the lifters and clean them out? If not then that's most likely the issue. |

The other possible issue is the oil pump relief valve is stuck shut. The excess oil pressure will cause the lifters to pump up too much and hold the valves open. Was there any problem with the car before rebuilding the head? |

Did you fill your lifters up with oil before you put them back together? if you did, thats your problem. They only need a light coating of oil on them. |

The car burnt about 1/4 quart of oil every 100 miles. Should i place the lifters in oil over night? or should i take them back apart and re lub them? |

Like the man said, don't fill them up, just a light coat of oil on all the parts. When you install them the plunger should be springy. They will fill up with oil by themselves after a short time running.

Even if they are full of oil they should still bleed down after awhile. If you used a heavy weight oil to assemble them combined with cool weather then they might not want to bleed down. I generally soak mine in lacquer thinner to dissolve all the crud and varnish, then assemble as is and install. |

yesterday after work i took all the lifters apart and recleaned them and then re installed them in the head and waited overnight. This morning, The valves still have gaps. How long do they take to bleed down? or is there something else i should try? |

With the lifters clean, and with just a drop of oil, practically dry, there's a cam position that all valves are closed. ![]() ![]() The lifters are either too full of oil, or they were assembled incorrectly. A very, very remote possibility is that the new valves are too long.

I just had annother idea that actually happened to a friend of mine. When you had the head done. Did they do anything to the cam journels. I had seen once where they had decked the top where the cam journels are and had to hone down the cam journels making the cam hold the valves open. Head junked and annother was done. |
