Ok folks here the deal. I replaced the timing belt on my 2000 1 liter. Everything looked good ( I work in a 1926 unheated garage with one florescent and a trouble light) I also gaped the plugs and sprayed the PVC with carb cleaner. When I started the car it seems to be a little throaty and has a vibration that does not seem normal. I'm going to look at it tomorrow morning but I was wondering :would timing off a tooth show up on a diagnostic scan tool. My neighbor has a snap-on and I want to know if it is worth walking down the street to borrow it. I messed with the distributor and the vibration didn't subside. One more thing, the car has no air, would I increase my gas mileage if I got rid of the double pulley on the crank? Thanks |

You might have some codes that might kick in but they are not going to tell you the timing belt is off a tooth. Its just going to be a after effect. No power is a good sign off being off a tooth. Might notice some difficulty in starting. As for the pulley, get in the order line for a underdrive pulley in the underdrive pulley thread. If you have the timing cover on the engine, run the crank gear mark up where it belongs and remove the distributor cap and see where the rotor is pointing to check for a tooth off. |

Thanks for you input. The motor fired right up and idles nice. I just remember it feeling smoother in the drivers seat. The car has been in the garage out of the weather for a month. Ive been driving the 96. I will look at the distributor in the morning. Thanks for the pulley info. |
