I already dropped the gas tank the other day and sprayed undercoating in the area above the tank and painted the new tank and installed a new fuel pump.

I've been going back and forth in my head all day deciding what color I want to paint the car. And how I want to do it. Acrylic enamel vs urethane. Single stage vs 2 stage. 1 color vs 2 tone. I'm conflicted.

And this build is not really economy minded. I'm using the 4.10 transmission with a regular camshaft. It's more to have a nice daily driver. I think I'm going to save all my spare parts for my plans to eventually build a super economy car from scratch. Using a G10 engine would be cool.

yep, i was amazed at how fast you stripped that car. :D

go slower with the re-assembly to make sure that you get everything right. when you rush, you can overlook things.

Taking apart is one thing. Putting it back together is quite another. ;)

Putting it back together shouldn't be too hard. I have all the pieces bagged and labeled. But I have to somehow remember what order to put things back on in...

Today I did not do much, but I had some fun. I loaded the car up on the forklift and pulled the car around to the power washer. Check out those frame horns!

Time to start prepping for paint. Then I'm going to paint the unibody from the A-piller forward with some cheapo spray can paint so that I can put my front end all back together. Then I'll worry about painting the rest of the car once I get it into a rolling chassis again.

My question for you guys is what color should I paint the engine bay? I'm thinking black wouldn't look too bad and I can get black for 99 cents a can. I'll see what Home Depot has in stock tomorrow night

I think lightgray would be a good choice. Black would be too dark to see if any oils were spashing on the firewall, plus you don't want to be looking down into a black hole. The black hoses would get lost with a black background. Use some sort of contrasting color. White or light gray is what I would use. Plus after you rattle can the engine bay, hit it with some clear poly rattle can paint. It might keep your gray from washing off in the future. hehe

Man I was hoping to see this car at GeoPalooza in a couple weeks, but you are in deep! It will pay off later!

This is fantastic. Awesome job jim! Once again i feel like a total amateur. It's KILLING me that you are turning an XFi into a base model though! I have the EXACT same car as you. Dou you realize the lengths folks go to to get an XFi? A fully restored XFi would probably be worth more than the original purchase price. :drool

Mine is more of a quick and dirty refresh. I'd love to go through everything with a fine toothed comb but with 4 weeks until school starts I have to get this thing done. Not to mention my budget is kinda killing me. I'm putting off the windshield, the carpet, the seats, the sound system, the lowering springs, the frame brace, and the strut tower braces until later.

just take the 2 screws out in the mounting base and pull .there may be a clip on it under the dash holding it to the dash iirc . also I always tie a long string to the end that plugs into the stereo and pull that up and out the top of car and leave it .so when you reinstall it . you can tie the coax cable to the string and simply pull it back inside the car makes it a lot easier .

Another slower day for me. Spent time prepping for paint. Getting off weatherstripping and oil and gunk and then sanding a little bit until I realized I need to go get a DA sander. I'm hoping to rent one but harbor freight has one for $35 also.

Here is what I got accomplished today:

Undercoated the frame horns and my wheels came in. Rest of my time was spent cleaning up the engine bay and sanding the roof and quarter panel.

Wheels came in so I'll mount the tires I got onto there. My Speedo will only be off 1 mph at 65 mph so that's good

I hope to get completely ready for paint by Monday when I'll paint the engine bay and then my paint should be here tuesday. Going to be doing a red and black two tone paint job. It should look slick with the wheels.
