I started my car just now and the belt was squealing, so I gave it a little gas to see if it would stop. It didn't do the trick. So I shut it off, waited a minute then started it with no squeak. But my car sounded like it was spuddering more than normal. And my idle was like 2100 when cold. So I shut her off. HELP! |

Doesn't sound like a timing issue however here is a link: http://geometroforum.com/topic/1145487/1/ and http://geometroforum.com/single/?p=652187&t=2689420 The belt squeal is because the alternator/water pump/crank pulley belt is loose, stretched, worn or dirty. A new Gator belt would help with better grip, according to some members. I loosen the Alternator (1 bolt on top and 2 on the bottom) then use a stick or crow bar to tighten the belt by putting a lot of force on the bar. I get the bar as far under the pump as possible. The bar is stuck between the water pump and Alternator so you have to be careful not to put too much pressure on the water pump. BEFORE I tighten the Alternator and with the belt off I clean the pulleys. Last time I used a little carb. cleaner and a wire brush. An electrical connection cleaner or acetone would work also. Make sure it dries before installing the belt. The squealing stops when the belt warms up. ============== You may have flooded your car. Sounds like excessive fuel from the start/stop/start/stop. Please describe the "spuddering more than normal" |

It's like a... Uh.. Can't describe it besides like popping in the exhaust? I'm not quite sure. I'm just going to replace both tbelt and alt/water belt tomorrow and time it correctly. What is best degree to time it too? I wish I knew more about these things! |

OK, popping in the exhaust. Follow that link to timing. Most of us set our timing at 8 degrees before Top Dead Center. TDC For more details and knowing more about these things you'll want to buy a Factory Service Manual. FSM EBay search: 1991 geo metro service. You will want a manual and maybe the electrical manual. I see $35 for the three. Maybe you can outbid for the two black books at $10 now? amazon.com doesn't have any better deals right now but you can check. |

A squealing alternator belt means you (temporally) have low voltage. Low voltage means weak spark. Weak spark can mean less than full combustion. Less than full combustion means the cat is working harder and can have a popping sound in the exhaust. Listen to Bad Bent. Tighten your alternator belt and I bet alot of your problems will go away.
