Check your wireless internet; It helps speed and security

Our local news channel aired a story of a raid on a family one night. It was for their internet being used for trafficing child porn. Turns out they had a wireless unsecured network and the neighbors were using it for the pictures.

Although verizon fios has a code to use our internet I went inside the router and made some changes.

Most routers you can access the menu by going to this website address 192.168.1.1 You can google yours and find the instructions. In the fios case the logon name was admin and the pass word was on the sticker on the router. If you reset your router using a pin it defaults to password.

Once in I changed the security to wap2 which is suppose to be the higher security. I then had to note the new password for use. I then changed the wireless to N channel for performance.

The options were amazing. It shows what was connected, you can limit what those devices can do, you can set parental controls, etc.

Now that I made those changes the wireless part is way faster, but my old laptop wont connect as its wireless radio was out of date, so ordered a new one off ebay for 7 bucks.

My previous wireless router I had itset to pretty high standards and infact you could not log on to the router to make any changes unless you used a wired connection. It seems the wired connection is the faster of all. :cheers

Cain and abel cracker software can get through all that extremly easy. You might wanna look into some software to protect you a bit better. For your net password remember no whole words include numbers and symbols. Its best if its completly random. Thsts enough to keep low end crackers out and to sliw down the better ones.

Just remember theres no such thing as internet security. If its on your computer and your computer is connected to the web then its unsecure information. There is always a way to crack passwords to steal info.

Gee, thanks Desmond. I think we all know locks are only good around honest people, but we also know many who plug in a router and dont enable any security features what so ever so anyone with a wifi device can connect to their internet and start looking at photos of kids, people having sex with animals, etc, etc, etc.

I like the fact I enabled N only that legacy equipment no longer can connect. :type :cheers

It would surprise you how many people never secure their routers. One day, just for kicks, I decided to see what my Blackberry would find where I live on a dead end street. I opened the scan to look for open networks while I drove slowly to my house. Most were secured, but then I got 3 open connections. Damn near ran out gas sitting there porn surfing! :D

Your average computer user has no clue how to set up a router.

I am the one on the left.

true- that.
I had xfinity in to check my internet since I was having end user problems- the guy comes in and attempts to log on to my router.
after about 15 minutes he comes to me and asks for the password- the cracker software he had couldn't get it.
I laughed- and plugged the password in. After the 24th keystroke- he looked at me and said "what, are you afraid someone will try to hack in?
I said No, not too much.
My wireless doesn't broadcast out past my front door. You pretty well have to be in my house to use it.
I know there are folks out there who have gain antennas- but whereas I don't broadcast the router name- it makes me hard to find. just something my brother set up for me.
:)

Got 70 MPG?

I used my next door neighbor's internet for about a year before they finally secured it. It's your own damned fault if you don't secure your internet and use a powerful router to broadcast your connection a quarter mile away. That's like saying, "Hey! Free internet! Come help yourself!".

Their internet was trespassing over your region anyways! :lol

even if you have a password like 5#dB00+$B11ARbxR5%%??Dm,dw2......there are hackers out there that have keystroke stealing software.

For some websites you would have to use your mouse to click on the letters, numbers and symbols....

When trucking I always could find internets open and free to use, some were better than others tho.

Econboxxxer has the idea tho, don't broadcast.

Interesting website:
https://www.grc.com/haystack.htm

This shows the comparable hackability of passwords. 123456789 takes 0.0000111 seconds to crack where 11111,,,,,aaaaaBBBBB takes 11.52 thousand trillion centuries.

:type Yeah, turn off the broadcast feature, but make sure to note your router name. :) You can adjust the power levels. One thing I did was remove the antenna to ours as its more than powerful enough for the whole home.

Sometimes people setup unsecured networks or a honey pot so people log on and they harvest the information. Just got to remember to turn off all your automatic apps that like check email log on to face book, etc so its all you in real time, so you can surf google images, assuming you arent logged into google. Then when you are on your home turf reenable all that stuff.

Something I do for passwords is take something and use it backwards. I also use 0 for an O I for a 1 or l 2 for a z and so on.
