I intentionally leave my routers open. I ENJOY being able to access random open hotspots when I need them traveling so I return the favor.

Plus its good CYA. got two words for you. Plausible Deniability.

as for security I firewall each machine on my network.

:popcorn Its my understanding if the network you access isnt secured, then the data being transmitted is also open to anyone with a packet smiffer to grab and intercept the info. So you should limit yourself to just browsing stuff that you do not need to logon to access and disabled anything on your device that automatically logons for that same reason.

Am I misunderstanding? :type

data over SSL is pretty secure. enough that there are much easier ways to snatch your information.

the point of the firewall is not to protect what you send (that is the job of SSL) but to physically protect the machines from intrusion from the outside. ie being "hacked"

if your on an insecure connection YOU SHOULD be careful what passwords or account numbers you type in UNLESS your connection is SSL encrypted then your as safe as your going to be.

:popcorn So you do your surfing from a wired connection?

That sounds nice to leave free wifi for folks, but I see the speed cut n half as other family members log on and I can go from seeing youtube clips download in full to having it buffer every few seconds.

no. well yes mostly wired but wireless too.

SSL is SSL does not matter if its 2g 3g 4g wigi b n a c or cat5. SSL is SSL. its BROWSER to SERVER regardless of what the connection is.
