Just picked up low mileage 94 3/5 Metro. It's in awesome shape but the driver window won't roll up. The handle feels stripped. Any thoughts on where to start? |

remove the inside window handle. take the screw out of the middle of the door handle. remove the door panel. look around inside. clean, adjust, grease the gear, use silicone spray on everything except the gear itself. |

Thanks. Never tried silicon spray before. Btw does anyone know what the large plastic piece located between the rear turn signals with the name GEO on it is called? I have to track one down and suspect I won't have much luck at the wrecker.

. Just called a 'Geo' center panel. If you have trouble finding one, I have one I may be willing to part with, since I opted for the red Swift center panel instead. Good luck with your window. Do like suggested and clean/silicone everything up. There are two 'slides' on the window regulator. The smaller of the two requires removing the regulator from the door. . I have the screws holding my window regulator to the door fall out, window fell down. If you have trouble getting the window crank off, run a rag between the handle and the trim piece behind it, and move it back and forth. It'll catch the clip holding the crank on and pop it loose. |

I'll have to try that. I've taken that handle off before and it was a PITA. |

Awesome! Let me know what you want for it if you think you can let go.

I got the panel off but lubing the slides does virtually nothing. The actual ratchet mechanism seems to be shot and I can't even loosen the screws that hold that in. Even if I do get the mechanism screws off I have no idea how to remove it from behind the metal door panel it's attached to. |

You can do it, it's not that tough. The screws that hold it in are usually very tight Use a vise grip on the head to remove all the screws--- you just have to get them broke loose with the vise grips(maybe a pair of pliers will work too) then use the screw driver out. When you get the ones out supporting the window get your hand through the door and support the window so it does not fall down and break. There are a screw on both ends of the bottom of the window frame you have to loosen and take out-- those usually come off okay due to the old lube on the track. Now you can support the window, lifting up and out of the way and then wiggle down and out the whole crank assembly. Then let the window down gently or support with some wood on the indside of the door. Now slop some wd40 or other lube in your crank assembly to loosen all up. You crank may indeed be bad(seen where the gearing is striped). or your X movement rods may just be bent and you need to straighten them out. Let us know how it goes-- take a pic if you can. Job done. The regulator was stripped (the teeth completely worn down). I switched it out for the one in my 92 firefly and everything works great. Only problem is that I used silicon spray and I see that I should have used grease. Goddamn, am I going to have to tear the whole thing down again? Ps. I was too caught up in the job (first time) and forgot to take some picks as requested. |

Spray on everything EXCEPT the gear--grease on the gear. Yep---tear her down now or wait til it screws up again and replace something then

I don't get what you're saying. I spayed silicon on on the rails and hit all the pivots and the crank assembly with wd40. What should I have done different? BTW, it turned out that the teeth in the ratchet were completely worn down. I don't know but...it looks like the original problem may have been caused by a bit of bending in the small slider bracket allowing the roller to pop out of the guide. I can't tell if the roller popped out because I removed that bracket as well. If that was the problem it seems like an absurdly weak link. Edited by bonehead, Feb 13 2013, 01:50 AM.

Oh yah, thanx nwgeo! I appreciate the tip on how to get the seized screws out using a vise grip. I wouldn't have thought of that. |

I understand this is a very common problem with these cars and mine had the same issue. If it happens again, you can usually get the window to go all the way up. Simple open the door, push up on both sides of the glass with both hands. This will get it past the "stripped" part of the gear. Then roll up the last little bit. All of these I have seen seem to have the problem right at the top of the travel. Using vise grips is a great way to get stuck screws out. I have also taken a dremel and ground a nice groove for a large flathead screwdriver on stuck/rounded off bolts/screws before. Conor |
