The Prius is a great car. But they are as slow or SLOWER than a Metro. I know two people who own them, and I have driven them both. Plus, they are $35,000 once you finance one out 7 years. Nearly all of those who were bashing the Metro in that Tundra thread have never owned one. Is the Metro the greatest car in the world? Well, yeah...it is kind of car everyone wishes were still sold here. Inexpensive, reliable, simple, and very, very efficient. |

Someone in that Tundra thread said about the metro something along the lines of "if it was so great, why did they stop selling them". I love it when supposedly smart people say things that even make ME look smart. The reason, of course, was the little car got 50 MPG when gas cost $.90 a gallon. It was an object of ridicule. Long before I had a car, I made fun of them. Everybody did. Except, of course, the people who owned one. Something my father said when I was younger sticks in my head - I think I was 14 or 15. We were talking about, strangely enough, Metros. He said to me "If the Metro had been for sale in 1973, you wouldn't have been able to keep one on the lot for more than two hours." |

Absolutely right. The Metro, like it's electric contemporary the EV-1, was a victim of bad timing. Had it come out ten years earlier or ten years later it would be legendary. But, as you say, it came out when gas was $0.90 a gallon (I remember paying $0.76 in the late 1990s), and everyone was happily buying 9 MPG SUVs. GM and Suzuki were very disappointed at the production numbers the Metro put up. So it became the butt of many jokes. But who is laughing NOW? Who would give a damn about the Prius if gas were $0.90 a gallon like it was in the late 1990s? How many would Toyota sell? |

nowhere in this thread have I seen anyone address the "fun factor". I would, but I just can't seem to put a $$$ value on the fun factor. What is the $$$ value when I pull up beside a new Prius at a gas station and tell the driver that I get over 50 miles per gallon on my ugly little $400 automobile, and watch his mouth drop open. I could give several other examples of the "fun factor" but one should be sufficient. Someone please give me a $$$ amount for the 'fun factor'. |

It is even more fun to do this to a guy who just spent $130 filling up his new $48,000 Dodge Ram. "It's got a Hemi..." Edited by Cobrajet25, Feb 15 2013, 04:05 AM.

The prius owner and metro owners are 2 completely different people. We don't think alike. You will never convince a prius fan that a metro is "better" than it and vice versa. Lets say I was driving a 2006 grand prix, or any average car, and was planning on buying a new car. The main factor was getting great mpgs. I would definitely look at the prius. .....but I'm not looking to buy a new car so the prius doesn't appeal to me. |

When someone tells me that I look at them funny, then look into the passenger area to see if the parking brake is up 7 clicks and then proceed to see if they have 7 psi in their tires. You hypermile in a Prius or Insight you can esily get double the epa or even mo.

the people whom I've meet that own a Pruis, bought it for the smug value...not for what the car really is...you know "Vanity"...not for practical reasons...the biggest reason they give is Carbon Footprint...I'm guessing they don"t realize how much pollution comes out of making those batteries, or for that matter, disposing of those batteries...I know that I have read somewhere that about 80% of people don't even know how to check their oil never mind putting air in their tires, they just bring it to the dealer or a quick lube...so they buy a new car every three years so they don't have to worry about repairs ,then they just buy the latest trend...prime example: the Fiat 500...I buy a car for practical reasons...what do I use it for?, reliability?, is it easy and reasonably to maintain?...and personally when it comes to the Metro I enjoy the fun to drive factor, I have driven a pruis...IMO not fun to drive... just my .02... |

Prius review: 'See the the trees, smiling at me as I go by. See the children, running out in front of it chasing their balls because they can't hear it coming.' - Jeremy Clarkson OT, here's a homebrew electric car: http://www.topgear.com/uk/videos/brand-new-clip-the-hammerhead-eagle-ithrust-part-1 part two: http://www.topgear.com/uk/videos/brand-new-clip-the-hammerhead-eagle-ithrust-part-2 Edit: damit that's only the 1st half. There was an episode of South Park about that.. ...those few I've known who owned a prius usually are bragging about getting 45 mpg. There isn't much chance to hypermile any kind of car in this part of Oklahoma - most of the ground is flat, lots of highway driving, backroad driving. In those same conditions, my $50 metro is getting 50 MPG. Edited by Tinker1980, Feb 15 2013, 11:01 AM.

I don't think the CRX's had lean burn, at least not like the VX with a D15Z1 engine. I know the carbed HF's (84-87) had a method to lean out the engine through the vacuum system, but now that is 25+ you have a ton of leaks to track down. If I had the money, I would get a 1st gen insight. |

If your the type of person who doesn't know how to even change oil on a car, buy a prius and take it to a dealer for everything. If you don't mind picking up a book to learn how to do it yourself, the Metro is the perfect car of all the cars I've had for mpg/dollar spent hands down imao.

Blah, Blah, Blah. I dont know what I like more about the Insight, the infinite gear ratios, the heater mirrors, the automatic climate control, all the traction control, skid control and brake what ya ma call its.....
Ever notice the Prius is in the left lane passing everyone? The new 2010+ are still getting 50 mpg doing that. Nothing like saving time and money. Lets see you factor in the time it takes out of your life to hypermile vs 15-20 over the posted speed limit? I make almost 20 bucks an hour. It took me 45 minutes each way hypermiling to work. Now keeping with traffic 20 minutes.
