So its probably not realistic (right now) to build an electric metro?.....based on money.

A motor and controller combo like the one I keep bragging about is around 4k, as well as the charger that I use.

Is that 4k for the conversion and another 4k for the charger, or 4k including the charger?

Depends on what you mean by "realistic". Even if it's 4k + 4k to do what evmetro did... still cheaper than a Prius.

EVmetro, what would happen if you used the motor and controller from an electric forklift? I know I couldn't use the battery, Forklift battery being 3,300 pounds, but certainly I could get away with using a motor that pulls a 12,000 pound lift in a 2200 pound (With batteries) metro?

Only electric vehicles I've messed with are motorized bikes... had a bike that used an old starter from a smallblock chevy. If I geared it low enough to get a reasonable and controllable speed (Like 25 mph) it had too much torque, but if I geared it higher the bike was too fast, and the motor got hot... This is the nonsense that happens when I get bored and there are motors/batteries/things with wheels on them lying around.

Forlift motors are a popular way to budget build. There are many other things that can save money. The ride I brag about is a little far out for most people, but it is good research and development for my planned future. You can get electrified for under 5k.

what is the lowest cost path to get the 55mph 100 miles you describe? I don't care if it takes 10 hours to charge.

I wasn't meaning in terms of vs a prius.....just in terms of what do you get for the money you put in.

Hell, I'd be interested in even just 60 or 75 miles.....but I like your thinking.

Fair enough. I only mentioned the Prius because we're in the Prius vs. Metro thread. ^o)

well 100 miles IS 65miles worst case (I hope)

my commute is 54 miles (one way) I need 65 to feel safe. so dead of winter race and sleet and slush heater blasting I need 65 miles. 100 miles "good" conditions should (I hope) get me that 65 miles worst case that I "need"

Charging at work no problem.

Yea but we all know that this thread is biased and most of us will say "Fuck Prius". lol

What the heck, lets just hijack the thread. Lowest cost really takes some homework, and I am not versed in this area. I picked up my electrometro ( the blue lead sled) for 3k and fixed the wreck for 500. Rolling for 3500. ( it is ripped apart now for upgrades and lotsa money) that was a tired lead pack, but upgradable to lithium and 60 mile range for 6000.

These threads have to get hijacked or will die. Where can this thread go. We really can't have 25 pages of people saying the same thing over and over!.......unless this is the memorable Theological Thread that would never end.

60 mile range for $6k is good imo.

$6000 for 60 miles? Ouch! Is the price of batteries ever gonna come down so the comman man can afford them? I think a Tesla would be a nice car, but not for $60,000-$100,000.

I will just stick to a gas burning metro and grit my teeth when gasoline hits $7/gallon this summer.

The metro is a fine car to own when gas skyrockets. I do not know how the lithium vs gasoline cost will add up yet, but the double your power and mpg at the same time gets me pretty excited. The folks that tweak their metros here on a budget will probably figure out the thriftiest ways to convert, and I will pass on what I am learning to anyone here that decides to make the jump.

There is no argument. The Geo Metro is the MPG king.
I was fairly certain honda had the mpg kings, but a regular guy like me cannot afford a honda Insight or Honda Civic Lean Burn...... these cars are MPG kings and nice nice but when I compaire a 10 year old honda to a 10 year old metro.... metro wins.. as ussual :) 10,15k compaired to 1-3k... Metros are low cost, and well, better than most cars. :) as far as the metro vs the prius. HSHAHAHHAAA ha.
