Hi, I found a Metro I want to buy, but the title has an issue. The ad I found says that the car was purchased in 2007, but the title was never changed over into the new owners name. The car was then handed down to two siblings who lost the title their mother gave them. How big a deal is this? Is getting a clear title going to come down to finding the guy who had it in his name and sold it to the mother? And side note, I'm dying to get a 3/5 convertible...so if anyone reading this knows of one for sale, I would probably want to take a look at it. |

You would have to check with Texas law. in Washington State you start by applying for a 'lost' title --- DMV checks to make sure it is not stolen and you have to wait 3 years to get a clear title. meantime if anyone shows up and shows ownership you might have to GIVE the the car....all kinds of legal crap |

Do your research carefully - some states not only have conditions under which you could lose the car but some states also require you to pay the past registration and taxes from the last time it was licensed until current before they will re-license the car. |

not sure for Texas, but in the past i haave delt with this on 1960's vehicles. the easiest route is to find the last person listed on the title and have them get a "replacement title". here in Wisc it is a $50 fee, for the person last listed on the title. if the vehicle is over 10 years, you can get an "affidavid title". this only requires you to present a history of the vehicle as best as you know it, and sign an affidavid to that. i had to do this when the owner died and the title lost. if you have a very small 'satilite office' of the DMV that is not busy, you can usually find a person in the DMV who doesn't have an attitude, and get alot of info from them, for your local laws. |
