I've had a colony of Purple Martins now for about 20 years. My early arrivals (some call them "scouts") have come on Feb. 21 for the last 8-10 years . This year I had 2 males that arrived 0n Feb. 19. I always look forward to them coming back to my yard each year. For those of you who don't know a lot about this wonderful little bird, they only eat flying insects , so in the fall (our fall), they fly all the way to Brazil (4000 mi.), where it is spring south of the equator. At the end of the Brazilian summer (our winter) they fly back to N. America (another 4000 mi.) for our spring and summer. They only mate in N. America , and once they mate and raise a brood of babies they will come always come back to YOUR yard year after year to raise another family. Since they only eat flying insects, the mosquito population is greatly reduced with hungry martins around, making summertime outdoors much more enjoyable. Two houses here. About 15 birds last year. Had to run a hawk off a few times. He would land on the house and go hole to hole. Made the house and poll and everything shake when he landed on it. |

Yeah, during the day the martins will usually chase off the hawks, but at night when the birds are in the gourds or house, the owls come around trying to get an easy meal
