So, now that im working full time im going to start setting aside money and buying lumber to build myself and my girlfriend a cabin. Im thinking of 2 rooms, with a full bath obviously, maybe even 3 rooms, with a full bath. I have not drawn up any plans for it yet, but im hoping maybe someone out there on this forum, does this for a hobby? Drawing up a floor plan, whats the word im looking for.... Blueprinting? Lol Anyway, i can do everything myself from the whole build, foundation on into plumbing, electical roofing, i can do it all Lol. Even had to dig a septic and field lines for a 500 gallon septic... wasnt fun took me weeks lol. But yea, ive never took somthing like this on by myself, i know i can do it, since ive built 3 cabins from the ground up, but i had help from 2 others one of which did it for a living years ago.. So ive learned what to do.. Just not good at the planning and floorplan layout Lol Anyway, Any help or advice would be great, my plans are to keep the whole build as cheap as i can, but not skimping on what needs to be done. I want 2x6 stud walls, instead of 2x4s so i can pack more insulation in the wall and sound proof it more with added insulation. I want it to be where i can watch out the window and watch a bomb go of and not hear it lol yea right, but atleast enought to where i wont hear traffic or dogs barking lol. anyway Off to bed. Oh, forgot to add, that we already have land, 2 acres

Scoobs, call me tomorrow when you have time. My cabin in ark. is small but uses space wisely. |

Well I am going to school for drafting so one thing I get to work on is laying out floor plans. My questions are, do you want a kitchen and a living room? and what size are you thinking for the foundation? I am guessing you are pouring a slab. |

Not sure yet, i need to see after i start paying my child support what my final take home from this first job. Im already working 2 jobs as it is, If its still not going to get it done quick enough, then i will look for a third part time job. I am not pouring a slab, i cant stand not being able to get under a house. Im going to dig out 2 feet all the way around, and pour a 1.5 foot by however long the walls are, base, and set cinder blocks on it, stacking them in 4s, then fill those with concrete, BUT thats after i lay down industial grade plastic tarp, and cover that with Pea Gravel. So that way the underside of the cabin, will always stay clean, JUST incase i have to get under to add or fix some plubing or electrical wires. An old boss of mine has his house build this way and even after 30 years, the underside of the house smells and looks like new, its still so clean under there when it was hot outside, it was nice and cool under there and i ate my lunch under the house Lol, the crawl space was large enough i could crawl under it and sit upright. Oh and one more thing, I ABSOLUTELY hate creeky floors, so when i do my flooring, im going to use 2 x 12s and for the floor itself, use 3/4 or thicker ply wood, but i will glue it down using liquid nails, so that way it will never creek. Im almost as jumpy as the old boss i had with ptsd from vietnam..... But i dont flip up tables when i get scared, just have to check my pants now and then. Ive had an interest in the new micro cabins that are under 100 sq ft. Also the solar cabins and those that not only use space well, but are energy efficient. Second thought its like a camper, but at least the camper is mobile.

Buy 2, bury the other one and use it as your basement or bail out shelter. You live in Tornado alley, right?

shipping containers are awesome, cheap sturdy easy to mod! If I were to build a bug out room it would be a buried shipping container! |

EDIT: You could put all your 'under the house' stuff on the ceiling of the 'basement' container and then you will have a stand up basement instead of a sit down basement. Edited by Old Man, Feb 22 2013, 03:19 PM.
