Hey all.
Had a fun day getting some goodies for my Metro. For starters I picked up a straight, but dirty hood off a 1990 for my 1991. It is still a white hood. I think in the end, the car will get painted. Lol. I also grabbed a passenger side mirror delete off an XFI, better hinges, front hood hold down, interior hood pull, window cranks, basic fasteners (10mm bolt heads), center support for the front end, and the black filler plate that takes the place of the transmission cooler/AC condenser in a manual/base model. My front end got smacked and there are a few bits that needed replacing.

The random goodie I grabbed was the camshaft gear off the XFI. I would have grabbed the whole cam assembly... but someone beat me to the thing. The valve cover was off, and the cam was MIA. So I grabbed the gear. I was thinking that it would bolt onto the end of my standard Metro cam and would give a more advanced timing? Is this possible? 3Tech doesn't seem to have any of the +10 gears, so I was thinking this would be a poor man's substitute? Am I wrong in this thought? If I had more money, I would have ripped out that XFI's transmission as well.

Could the XFI cam gear be used with a 3Tech econo cam to achieve a similar result to the econo cam and +10 gear? I want to get one eventually, unless I run across an XFI with the cam still in the head. I know I am not the only WA resident on the board, let alone the only one in my area that has heard of the XFI swap. Lol.

Spent a whopping $50, and most of that was the hood. :D

I have heard of women talking about a shopping high. Never understood until a very successful PnP pickup.

The camshaft timing gear is not where the XFI'ness comes from. It's in the camshaft.

Get yourself a nice standard camshaft from Pick-n-Pull.

Drive to 2666 Tacoma Ave SE, Tacoma, Washington 98402. That's where Delta Cam is located. $74.50 and 3 days later, you will have a camshaft reground to XFI spec.

You'll need a 6 degree advance timing gear to make it a true XFI configuration, as well as the transmission. I know of more than one Geo Metro owner/driver who have not installed an advance timing gear with their 0.300" lift camshaft, and are very happy with the installation. As a matter of fact, one of them removed the 10 degree advance timing gear after having previously installing it.

I have the distributor case gasket and distributor o-ring you're going to need for the swap.
