I'm wanting to buy a bore gauge - no not the type that tells how exciting I am - the kind to read cylinder bores ect. I want to check cylinders for out of round and taper and want to buy an el cheapo. These are of course generally poo-pooed by machinest websites. i would like to by name brand, but don't really want to drop $250.00 +. Less than a hundred is about what I can see spending. I was wondering what others are using and if I really need a name brand to scheck the cylinders myself. The garden variety el cheapo precision seems good enough at 5 ten thousands resolution. Our books show values in one ten thousands range, but it's hard to get useful results below that anyway. I appreciate all comments, thoughts ........ |

The requirements for a good rebuild for a metro is the piston to bore is .0008-.0015 --- that would be impossible to measure accurately with a "5 ten thousands" bore gage. |

Fine a cheap inside caliper and a digital mic, should do the trick.

I've got this one from 'Cylinder Head Supply' ---> http://www.cylinderheadsupply.com/cydiboga01.html The Dial is in half thou increments yes, but the resolution is such that you'll be able to see a tenth of a thou movement without difficulty. They are good for doing comparative measurements like out of round and taper, if your trying to accurately measure bore diameter however you'd need to set the gauge against a fixed standard like a ring gauge or a set of gauge blocks because its not a micrometer .... just good for comparing one diameter to another.

I use a telescoping gauge and a micrometer. I can get the same number 2 out of 3 times within 0.0001". It's not a very expensive setup. My machine shop has the high dollar bore gauges. $1,200 for the set. He's the guy who does the precision machine work, so he needs the high dollar tools. There's a few nice sets of telescoping gauges here for under $20. http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_trksid=p3984.m570.l1313&_nkw=telescoping+gauge&_sacat=0&_from=R40 Bore gauge. http://www.ebay.com/itm/PRECISION-ENGINE-CYLINDER-HOLE-DIAL-BORE-GAUGE-GAGE-SET-/310305703797?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item483fa94775&vxp=mtr |
