Alright first off the search function doesn't work on my phone and I need some clarification soon. Anyway, replaced belt a week ago with a good year gatorback and the damn thing is squealing even more at higher rpms unless the engine is hot. I now assume it's the alternator because the car does not overheat and the squeal comes and goes when the heater is turned on or off. Is there any upgrades to the stock alternator, and where should I get one? |

How tight is your belt? These things need to be VERY tight or they will make noise. Check this tread for more info: http://geometroforum.com/topic/5080895/1/ Edited by Smidgen, Mar 4 2013, 03:01 PM.

Re-tighten the belt and it may have gotten dirty so re-clean the pulleys for good measure. I like to use some steel wool or a wire brush to get deeper in the valleys and lightly rough up the surface. Alternator upgrades I don't know about. You might try Google Advanced Search: http://www.google.com/advanced_search?q=google+search&hl=en&prmd=ivns Set the site to geometroforum.com |

![]() ![]() ![]() There's all the bearings. Look pretty damn clean. Both pulleys move freely the only minor detail being the water pump sqeaks slightly. I'll put the belt back on and report back after tightening it |

I discovered a short cut to tightening the belt without fiddling with the altenator bolt in any way. Leave the original setting or if you moved any bolt on the altenator set them back to original. I just track the belt on the pulleys including the loose water pump pulley and pry the water pump pulley on with a screwdriver wedged on top . Take care to line up the bolt holes of the pulley with the 4 wings on the water pump when you pry it on to make it easier when it mounts. My new GAtes/NApa belt doesnt make a peep and is tight.

It looks like your belt is rubbing on the timing belt cover ........ possibly the source of the squeal ??

Prying a belt on is rough on the belt. |

If you had an oil leak from under the timing cover like the cam or crank seal, the oil seems to cause the gasket strip on the timing cover to swell and pushes it out onto the pulley and belt, causing it to rub and wear. I sprayed my best timing cover down with carb cleaner to remove the oil and let it sit overnight. I then trimmed the foam strip where it was swelled and reinstalled. Conor |

I actually pry the water pump pulley through a slot while the belt is tracked on it. I see absolutely no difference in what I did and what others do when prying/tightening the altenator to get desired taughtness. |

I actually tightened it and the squeal has been gone for three days so far. I thought the cover was normally that snug against the pulley. |
