used engine price; used some oil

I'm always looking for extra parts for my car. The motor in my car runs good but at some time I might need another motor.

Found a used one on craigslist mostly complete, no intake or throttle body or exhaust. Says it has 111,000 miles and used some oil when pulled. Wants $100 for it.

Is that a fair price? I know a complete engine at pull a part will cost me about $175. Guess either way it is a gamble.

Buy it but offer less, and if he won't take less say okay and pay the 100.

Kind of a blind shot if you can't hear it run in person. Rotate the engine a couple of times to see if it's locked of broken parts prevent you from turning it over. IF your real interested, see if he will let you pull the head. Look at the head and the cylinder walls.

That is a steal for a good used running engine. Give it a look for leaks, oil condition (at least gives indication of recent care), oil in the air cleaner area, EGR, PCV, etc. If you have time, pull the oil pan and look at the bottom of the engine for crud. If it looks like a tar pit, consider it a good rebuild core. If the smooth metal surfaces are clean, you might have one that saw some care in its life. If the castings are brown, that isn't a huge deal but sludge on anything is a bad sign. You can also look up at the bottom of the cylinders with the oil pan off and get an idea if they are scratched or not.

Either way, $100 sounds like a great deal for a complete running engine. Having personally sold many things online, it gets a little old getting lowball offers on things that are already priced very low. I traded for a used engine with an item worth at least $350. This was a Marlin 336 .30-30 rifle with a scope and it was right before deer season here so I would say they got a good trade. I also avoided having to spend the time and money getting my other engine rebuilt so I thought it was a good deal.

I am currently making a system, a standalone system to make a G10 run outside of the metro, so that way i can do bench tests with my propane conversion right here in my bedroom :D lol

What things could cause the using oil?

I know the rings could for one, but can't do a compression test on it before buying it. Plugged PCV valve? Maybe it leaked it instead of used it?

For 100 dollars, I would rebuild it outside of my current car, and swap it once done. Then, turn around and sell my old engine for 200.

Thanks for the helpful suggestions. I emailed the person that has it and they still have it available. Just got to get a day off to go look at it.
