I got my new timing belt on and its as snug as my altenator belt now. Is that ok? The old belt was a bit sloppy and wobbled when viewed through the peep hole. Now my new Gates timing belt is firmly tracking like my new Gates altenator belt as well. I gave the tensioner spring a good budge this time and the tensioner stud sits 3/4ths up the slot from max. The old setting was dead center in the slot. How do I know if its too tight(short of it snapping)

I have seen and heard of people that just let the spring do the tensioning, preferably, i remove the spring from mine, fear of it falling off into the belt, i just snug mine up, not too tight, altho some belts i do crank it tight, but then it makes a warbling noise almost like a turkey when its too tight, it might stretch the belt sooner. |

Yes it can be to tight. I had to get a spring from a junkyard so I could tension mine right, I had it to tight and it destroyed my tensioner pulley in only days.. |

I held my breath and started it. It was like I never did a thing No squeal, just a low tone hum. Drove it for about 5 miles around town and the hum seems to be gone. Seems the transmission-engine transfer is more responsive now that the slop in the old belt is gone MAybe its me?Strangely though, the engine likes to stick around 1500rpm for about 3 seconds after releasing throttle before dropping back down to idle 850rpm Probably a vacuum line?SO can the timing belt be as drum tight as the altenator belt on these Metros without consequences? Do they strech some after a while? Its a Gates/ Napa
