I have been having an intermittent problem that is quite concerning. I am suspicious of the ignition coil and maybe the fact that water might have gotten inside or something along those lines. Here is what happens. 1. I come out on a cool morning when frost is on everything like the plants, car windows, etc. 2. I start the car and it fires up and idles/runs like a champ. 3. I run the car a couple minutes getting turned around, out of my driveway and up to the county road. 4. The car then starts to run horrid, barely idle, and miss like crazy. It stalls during the worst of these episodes and will continue to do so for 15 minutes or longer so the engine is fully warm by this time. 5. I let the car sit somewhere for a while and I come out and it starts up and runs just fine and doesn't happen until another cool morning with frost. I am wondering if there is moisture condensing and freezing on some part of the ignition system. So, I start the car and it runs fine as long as this moisture remains in the frozen state. As it melts over a short period of time, the problem begins and continues until it all evaporates. Does this sound like a possibility? If so, what part should I investigate? It does pretty well at speed but will stall and idle like crap if you let off. I swapped the ignition coil with another spare for good measure in case this is the problem. What else could cause this behavior? Thanks, Conor |

I had a blazer that would run real bad anytime moisture was in the air. Ended up one of the plugs was cracked. Also could be the distributor gasket |

Ok, the plug is easy enough to check but what about the distributor? I recently had the entire distributor and valve cover off to change possibly sticky lifters. I am not wondering if some of this symptom was something else but will say my engine ran better after that work. I replaced the distributor housing gasket and the O-ring which allows the distributor to be rotated in order to set the timing as part of this work. I may pull my plugs and look for a cracked insulator. Conor |
