My '92 has electronic timing adjustment, no vacuum lines to the distributor. I know I'm suppose to use a paperclip to short two pins on the connector that prevents the distributor from adjusting itself while timing. The problem is, I don't know which pins, or which connector. Everything I see says it's this one near the driver's side strut tower:![]() But the sticker on the hood looks like this: ![]() So how does it make sense that the sticker shows 4 pin choices when there are 5 wires in a 6 pin connector? Could it be that THIS is the right connector? ![]() The problem is, this connector is on the passenger side of the engine bay right next to the headlight harness. I tried shorting this connector and a few options on the one on the driver's side, but nothing would make the timing mark stop jumping around so I could get it set correctly. I'm also having problems getting it started. It won't start when it's warm and it barely starts up when the engine has been given a short chance to cool off a bit. When it does finally start up and run, it runs pretty rough and want's to die at low rpms. It needs an awful large advance in timing just to keep it running, but like I said I can't get it set accurately. When I retard it back to a normal amount, the engine sputters and shakes like it's mixing a paint can. Could I have another issue as well? Thanks! |

Connect jumper wire between the terminal with the black wire and the one with the purple/green wire to check the timing. Have you done a compression test on the engine? |

That's not your original hood. |

That's what I was thinking too, CB. My 92 XFI Hood has the 6 pin connector shown on the sticker. The connector you want is the first one you pictured (up by your driver side strut). When you jumper the pins, your engine should idle down a little bit (at least mine does...). Edited by Rang-a-Stang, Mar 8 2013, 05:25 PM.

Thanks everyone. I'm not surprised by the fact that it's not the original hood... I found which connection jumps it and got the timing set. Turns out my rough running issue wasn't timing after all. I made a new thread as to have a more appropriate title to attract better advice. ---> http://geometroforum.com/topic/5087709/1/ |
