Rings seat; Probably a dumb question

As many of you know I bought this car with rebuilt transmission and engine. About 5 months ago. I drove about a month and fuel economy kept dropping I found several bad sensors, bad fuel injector, and I had burnt exhaust valves, so low compression. I had the head rebuilt but the bottom looked good and had no leak down so I left it. I have maybe 8,000 miles on bottom end and 4,000 ish on top end now. It runs well and drives nice but I have only been managing 47 mpg average.

So now I put in a tachometer. I am idling high and come to find out I had been driving it like it was made of the finest porcilin... I doubt I ever broke 3k rpm... I was shifting at 25,35,45,55... Anyway I guess I am wondering if low rpm at driving would cause my rings to not seat well, or if the fact there was no leak down means they are seated well? Just curious after reading Glenn saying he drove it like he stole it till the rings seat.

Your rings are fine, the leak down test confirmed it. There are those who feel you should drive gently until the rings seat and those who feel you should drive it like you stole it until they seat, both seem to work. I fall into the treat it decently camp.

What did you do to reduce the idle? Typically idle is set at the factory and doesn't need adjusted. High idle is commonly a vacuum leak.

Turned the idle adjust screw in a clock wise direction. I've replaced all the sensors, vacuum lines etc. the "factory preset" may have been ok still until the guy I bought it from but I'm positive he messed with it. I already made sure my tps was good/properly adjusted, my butterfly valve good... :-). I may try to unblock my iac now that my idle is where it belongs.
