mystery oil problem

The car is a 90 3/5 with a completely rebuilt engine. New pistons and ring. New seals and gaskets. New top end. Etc. Car got probably 15k miles on it and randomly its started making a loud clatter, not the lifters ticking, but sounded like it was starving for oil. We took the valve cover off to check thing out and found the back #1 can cap bolt/stud broken. Broke off in the head. We tried to drill it out but royally effed the head doing so. So i grabbed a spare rebuilt head I had for the xfi minus cam. Threw it on with no blow gasket and new bolts. And still making the same loud noise.

It ran with full power and wasn't missing or anything. Oil light wasn't on, nothing. Just making a terrible sound. We decided to drive it see if it would stop or maybe figure something out. And we were right, it stopped alright. Got hot then lost power slowly. Got it pulled over, it came down to idle and only then the oil light flickered for a second and then car died. I'm not sure wat to look for... open to suggestions.

Thank you.

Who ever rebuilt it had a faulty torque wrench and your new engines ruined? Those bolts break if over tight did you do it yourself? Did it have a new oil pump too? Sounds bad hopefully it was warranties work...

Yes I did do it. It wasn't broken when it was put in. Oil pump was not replaced. I've never heard of that being necessary. But like I said car ran great for 15thousand miles then out of the blue this happened

Broken piston skirt? Regardless, you need to tear it down to find out.

"Yes I did do it."

I think they did themselves.

I also say tear it down, inspect everything measure everything... Do you have an fsm? Did you use a torque wrench? Is it a "good " torque wrench? Something's wrong, tear it all apart, inspect. Sucks but sounds like its a must.

At work and reading this brought up a question, how do you torque the cam cap bolts? does a deep well socket fit over the stud? Things that make you go: hmmmmm. Night shift makes you think of alot of random stuff.

Install two nuts on the top of the stud and lock them together. Use a short socket. Easy, peasy. :thumb

I finally got the towed home. I pulled plugs and turned over by hand and there is a definite clunk at a certain point every time. So I'm thinking rod bearing. I also pulled air filter and there is oil all over tb. Not just blowby. But looks like a dumped a quart down it. All vac line are full and everything associated in the intake system.
