I've read up on the EGR, cleaning it and checking for other clogs. I read in another forum to start the engine with the EGR valve off and check to see if there is suction in one of the ports and exhaust in the other port. I started the engine and it just revved up higher and higher so i turned the engine off. Why would this happen? could it be because the hoses that go to the EGR was left open? I could use some help on this one! Thanks |

Pull the egr valve off. Take a short piece of rubber hose and hold it tight against both holes one at a time and see if you can blow thru both holes in the intake. You should be able to blow thru both holes. If not, its restricted and needs cleaning out. Put the valve back on and crank the car and goose the throttle under the hood with your hand while touching the diaphram side of the valve. When you goose the throttle you should feel the diaphram move on the egr valve. It stays closed at idle. It revved higher because it had more vaccum pulling into the engine with the valve removed. |

I took my EGR valve apart and cleaned it and put everything back together, but when inspecting it the valve did not move very much if at all when revving it. Is it time to just buy a new EGR valve? I will note, that I have a Service Engine Soon light on. a code scanner revealed that I have a P0455. So I am trying to search for this issue. I did take the PCV valve off and bought a new one. the hose was really clogged. Also, when getting to the valve, I took the air cleaner and filter off. the "bowl" the filter sits in had a small amount of oil in it. Is this from the PCV valve being severely clogged or do I have some major work that needs done? Edited by evadfa, May 8 2013, 06:44 PM.

I am not totally sure here, but after cleaning the EGR valve and putting it back on I started the car and it idled at 1500RPMs until it got a little warm then it went down to a little under a 1000 which is where is was hanging before I started poking around the car. Also I think even though the valve does not seem to be working right, I can feel a little bit better power response. Next project is to crack into the exhaust under the car and see about replacing it. |

If the valve is not working right the first test is the diaphragm. Move the diaphragm all the way in and place a finer over the vacuum port. The diaphragm will stay contracted as long as your finger is there. If not, it leaks and you need a replacement valve. I f it passes this test the other question is whether you exercised the valve manually enough to break up carbon preventing it from moving. Ideally you need a new valve. You may also have trouble with the switching valve or the modulator valve. Having a vacuum pump helps in diagnosing the whole system. |
