Burning oil/ Where to start?; Car Burns oil and Smokes

So, bought the 91 vert a couple a weeks ago( was advertised as a 92 hence my member name). As I said in my intro on my first post , 91 LSi vert, manual trans with air! Seems like a solid car, unmolested, very minor surface rust 99.9 origional,138k.

PO said car was sitting about 7 mo prior to my purchase, he did say it used oil, said smoked at startup but went away after warmup,Guess what..... not so much! Haven't really got the amount pinned down as of right now, but it's a decent amount( I'm tracking it as I drive now). Iv'e changed the oil to HighMileage 10-30, it case it's valve seals, changed the pvc valve, plugs changed, found oil build up, not excessive but buildup( not sure how long they have been in so not really helpful). Car runs fine, idles a little high but smooth, seems to have plenty of power, temp is normal, no coolant or oil leaks, smoke seems to be less the more I drive it, but definetly still an issue, not billowing, but at shift points and deceleration it"s most noticeable.

So..... where to start looking..... compression test?..... leak down?......... be patient?.....does it sound like it's top end or ? Any feedback would be great..... Thanks!

remove the plugs and put a teaspoon of MMO (Marvel Mystery Oil) in each plug hole and leave overnight.
In the morning lay a rag over each hole and hit the starter a couple of seconds to blow out the excess oil, then start and run normally.

Add some MMO to the gas tank for a couple of tankfuls. That should loosen up your rings then see if it still smokes/burns oil

compression test would be a good start also
