Just posted about this in the introduction section and felt I should go ahead and move my posts to other parts of the forum. Ok just to make sure we are on the same page here. We bought a 97 lsi 3/5 couple of weeks ago. Supposedly had a complete rebuild and rebuild head with new valves and guides within the last 40,000 and new clutch less than two years ago, car is high miles 274,000 but very clean with no rust!. PO seemed very trustworthy and shame on me for trusting him as I did not do a compression test. The car ran great for the first few days but gradually started a miss that has now become a full no fire cylinder #3 and the little motor is trying to jump right out of the car at idle. Smooths out at higher rpm and is not KNOCKING.

Bought a compression tester Sat. morning and believe it or not it was stolen out of my car during a quick run into the grocery store just after buying it. :( So I still do not have compression readings. Paper sucks back into exhaust pipe and no change in idle when number three plug wire is pulled. #1 and 2 both change engine idle when plug wire is pulled. This is how I have determined that at the least my #3 exhaust valve is toast. Could feel almost no pressure when covered number three plug hole with finger and cranking. 1 and 2 pushed my finger out of the plug holes.

So now we need to decide what direction to go with this car. Quickest and easiest seems to be buying a rebuilt head for a couple bills and putting it on or having it put on. Then there is my concern about the rest of the engine, pistons, rings, bearings etc. I am not much more than a starter, alternator, oil and filter changer so this kind of major work seems kind of daunting but not necessarily beyond my abilities. We may decide to just do the head or go for a complete rebuild or something in between? Anyone know a Metro specialist in or near central Va? Any and all input here greatly appreciated. Peace out

274,000 miles is a lot on a Geo Metro.

I just did an overhaul on a 171,000 mile 3 cylinder engine. It had a lot of tow miles behind an RV.

Engines with that kind of mileage typically need to be bored out and have the crankshafts ground, etc., to get them back into top notch condition.

I have a core engine to build for you.

Thank you Geo Glenn! One of your engines is what we would like to do for sure. Need to figure out the particulars. PM sent.

I didn't get the PM, but I'm pretty sure you sent me an email . . .
