Many questions on possible Suzuki Swift purchase.

I figured the 'Engine Tech' forum is where most of the expertise would be, so here it is.
I may wanna grab this Suzuki Swift. I know the woman wants to get rid of it but I haven't discussed many details with her yet. I'm thinking $500 max. My goal would be to build this into an awesome little commuter car. Used/remanned motor, I have a buddy that'll rebuild the tranny for parts only (if necessary), most of the paint should buff out and I love the ground effects! I'm not up to speed on these little burners but I'm perfectly capable of fixing/fabbing/building whatever needs to be done to this ride (resources are just a little tight right now). My questions are...............

1) What year is it? Wasn't able to check data tags or reg.

2) What's the factory MPG on these things?

3) At 271Km I'd probably go with a used or remanned motor. Is this 1.3 the same short block as a Geo Metro 1.3? Some Geo's have 1.3's, correct?

4) If so, is the twin cam 16 valve head a direct bolt-on? Or, is this motor/head specific to Suzuki?

5) Are any junkyard parts interchangeable such as Metro's? Doors are sagging badly. Hinges/pins? Swifts are non-existent in the local yards.

6) It's an automatic. How strong are those trannys?

I'm gonna guess around 1994 model. Was getting excited for you until I read it's an automatic. 25 city 31 hwy mpg. If it was a manual mpgs would be 31/39

Got boost?

1) Swift GTs only came with the automatic in 89, so unless it's been swapped from a 5-spd, it's an 89
3) It has a G13b engine in it which is specific to the suzuki swift gt(i). It is not the same as the SOHC engines in geo metros
4) ^ no
5) Most of the parts are directly interchangeable with Metros exterior and interior wise. The doors will swap easily
6) The transmission is the weakest part of the drivetrain especially with the 100hp performance engine attached to it. I'm not sure if the reason autos were only in 89 was because nobody wanted them, they were so weak, or both.

That said, the swift GT is a fun little performance car that many members here would be dying to have. I'd be all over it for $500

At 271,000 miles, that G13 engine might just be in fine condition. If it runs and drives and will pass emissions, you're good to go.

Don't start fixing things that aren't broken.

Nice find. The '89 GTi's are very rare, especially with the automatic transmission.

Thanks for all the info! The major reason I would buy it, besides the looks, is gas mileage. The 25-31mpg may have scared me off. I'm looking for high-30's/low-40's. I'm gonna have to rethink the purchase.

Another question. Would that particular ground effects body kit bolt on to a Metro? Any year? Slight mods would not be out of my realm.

This should help:

I know it's a Swift GT but same info applies. :thumb
If it drives under its own power, $500 is totally worth it. ^o)

That is not the car for MPGs.
