I have had a 1996 Geo Metro 4cyl with an Auto tranny in it, I've grown unhappy with it. I am wanting to swap to a 5 speed instead. It will improve my MPG and plus I prefer driving a stick. Of course I will need the transmission and clutch. Is there anything else I am missing? I just want to know what I'm getting into beforehand. Thanks in advance! (: |

You need an entire donor car to do this kind of swap so you get the mounts, pedal assy, linkages, etc |

1996 - 1997 donor car will make the conversion a piece of cake. The best thing to do is sell your present car, and get one that got a 3/5 already installed. |

It is a PITA to swap a 5spd into an auto. There is electrical plumbing issues that need to be considered, also. I will throw my hat into the ring and say, just sell your auto and buy a 5spd. It will save you money in the long run. |

My mechanic friend has the know how, he is helping me out for a bargain. He could find out what parts I need exactly but is unable since he's quite busy. Also, I have been looking for a donor car for awhile. Pinning one down has been a problem, been to junkyards auctions craigslist... you name it. I just want to get this project rolling already. |

Craigslist. $1,700 and you're done. Sell yours and call it good. http://sanantonio.craigslist.org/pts/3689540018.html You could have Johnny Mullet and all the tech certified guys working on your conversion project 40 hours per week, and it would still take a month. |

I saw that posting earlier today. I'm aiming for a 4/5 geo, they seem to be more responsive than a 3/5. If I'm asking for too much just let me know. I can just have a good sit down with my friend and we can figure it out, was just wondering if someone has experience with this procedure and could help. Thats all. |

I did mine a couple years ago, got a whole donor car from dads neighbor for 25 bucks, you will need the shifter, clutch/brake pedal assembly, mounts for the manual tranny, clutch, pressure plate, clutch alignment tool, think there was a rod that ran from the shifter up to the engine mount that is needed too....just way easier to get a donor car...pretty simple that way....and it dosent take 40 hours a week and a month to do, had mine done in 2 days working on it after work for a like 6 hours a day. also on the end of the crank there is a spacer that has to come off before the pressure plate will go on...Bob |

The 4/5's are ideal. You can still get over 40 MPG, and you have extra power when you need it. I've scored 50 MPG with my 4/5. The 3 cylinders are good for trips not involving any mountain driving. My 4/5 is the queen of cross country travel.

i did my the exact conversion you about 2 years ago on mine. you almost really need a donor car. the rear motor mount, intermediate shaft and ECM are must haves. that mount and shaft are hard to find and theres no way around it. the auto ECM will work but check engine light will stay on. you . also have to run a wire from the VSS to the ECM so the light goes out. i can help you with that its easy. its not a hard job takes about 2 days or so. the only reason i did it was my car only had 74,000 miles on it i figure it still has plenty of life left in it. |

ive done it but i have a welder and made my own motor mounts.u can use the old metal pipe for the radiator and hoses and ecu.but u do need to change the left drivers side motor mount and rear motor mount.cut a notch out of the shifter tunnel.u will also need a shifter for the apropriate cylinder engine all the shifting linkages driveshafts and the halfshaft for that year and engine size.u also need to wire the transmission wiring to where it thinks its in netrual or it wont start or wire the n pos to your clutch switch.u will also need a clutch cable and clutch pedal assy.cost me about 600 bucks to do it myself.also need clutch kit flywheel and 5 speed tranny and new seals for the transmission always replace the seals whether u think they need them or not.i learn the hard way after cooking up to transmissions.
