Electric Metro Conversion Parts; convert your Metro to electric

Ok, the formula to calcute the size (amp hours of your cells) is 18750 watts divided by the pack voltage. I do not know what yours is yet, but I think your future need is 144. 18750รท144=130. 144 volts is 45 cells, and they would need to be 130ah. This math should allow you to plug in different figures so you can ply with it a bit, but bear in mind that the 200 watt hours per mile that I calculated is going to vary quite a bit for different driving styles and speeds. I won't post any claims yet, but the tevie1 build I expect to run well under 200 watt hours per mile. I respect coche blancos "if there is no pic, it didn't happen" , so when this is back on the road I will post screen shots of the facts. (Yea, screenshots, more on that in the future...)

wow. well it kind of don't matter. even that 108v pack would be $8500 or many many times what I can dream of affording :-(
The 108 volt pack in the tevie1 has a different brand of cells that is a little fancier so that pack was a bit more, but yea, even 8500 is still more than I paid for my '96 3/5 off the showroom floor. (it was actually outside with 20 other new metros and they were kinda dusty) The thing to consider here is that you are done with the pump, which is the biggest savings. You are also done with oil changes, brake jobs if you run enough brake regen, antifreeze, thermostats, air filters, plugs n wires, caps n rotors, fuel filters, cat converters, mufflers. Depending your components, you can have a really bad ass hotrod too, while you still enjoy the above savings. The tevie1 is not super bad ass, but even 110 lbs of torque in this lighter than original metro takes it way ahead of being the simple mpg king that metros are. I can afford a fancier car than a metro, but it just so happens that if a person is interested EVs and builds them based on basic principles of physics he will be naturally drawn to the metros the same way that a mpg freek will eventually find them.

I know that evmetro. your preeching to the quire (spelling?) regarding EV's. you clearly have not seen my electric car "rants" :-) hehehe put it this way. I FREAKED when I found out a geo metro was a "chevy" brand because I vowed to never buy a GM product. but I appeased myself knowing its actually a suzuki.

put it this way. I know for a FACT that we can build a 100 mile range 4 door mid size sedan TODAY using existing components that will last the average user 20-25 years before they even have to think about a battery replacement and the car could be sold full retail with profit and no subsidies for $13,775. fact. they simply refuse too and GM made sure of that when they intentionally nuked the E95 NIMH packs. (which btw had a full retail price of $4500 15 years ago!)

I am 100% devoted to an EV future. but the pump will always be cheaper than an EV when you have no money and the reason is simple.

the pump does not cost $8500 it cost $35.

sure. I spend $6000 a year in gasoline but that is spread over a year. the $8500 pack has to be paid for "now" all at once. WHILE ALSO still paying for gasoline in the mean time.

see the issue.

What pisses me off is how the nicad packs that you talk about are not available to us, but the rights are owned by one of the big oil companies. They are blocking development of cars that do not consume their product.

evmetro. its NIMH not nicad and ovonics HAS the patent back (they fought long and hard and finally got it back)

but it does not matter. they can't bring the battery to market as they don't have the industrial capital means to do so. this is why they needed GM.

you see batteries is not something some techy in his lab can cook together like you can an electric motor or a curtis controller or a charger.

batteries are not special they are just not "easy" to DIY. in fact for the most part YOU CAN't DIY a viable battery pack. you really do simply need the massive industrial production capital that GM can bring to bear on the problem.

sadly there are only 3 entities on the PLANET who have the industrial capital access to make viable mass produced nimh large format battery packs.

Major Automakers
Government
Oil Companies.

and ALL THREE of them have extremely vested interests in NOT making the batteries so they DON'T period.

and most of our population is too stupid or apathetic to realize they should be demanding it.

I hear people all the time say what about battery companies why can't they make em.

because the likes of energizer - duracell - everready - panasonic - sony yes even those guys.

are CHUMP CHANGE compared to the 3 I listed above.

if ALL the battery companies on earth pooled their resources they would not have a FRACTION of the capital needed to mass produce these batteries at $4500 a pop. if at all.

sad but true. even once the patent expires it won't matter because once again. the only 3 entities ABLE to do it DO NOT WANT to do it.

I have matched sets of precision motor plates now. One side fits the metro bell housing, the other fits popular electric motors. The other piece is a clutch adapter. It simulates the end of a 3 or 4 cylinder metro crankshaft so you can bolt a flywheel to it. The inside is 1 1/8" shaft with a 1/4" keyway. This fits on popular electric motors. These two matched components make it really easy to mate an electric motor to a 5 speed metro transmission and run a clutch and flywheel. I have ten matched sets of these that I will be posting on the website store front that I am building, and I can easily have more machined at any time. (actually, two of them are spoken for... Tevie1 and Tevie2 will each get a set...) I will soon have a bad ass TIG welded aluminum motor motor mount kit available as well, so that I can sell a complete electric motor installation kit where everything just bolts in with no fabrication skills needed.

I am still learning how to run this guy. I am learning how to use my right foot on the pedal, right hand on the torch, and left hand adding filler... I will still need some time before the mounts are ready for the market.

Does anyone have a source for a GOOD Warp-8 Tail end Motor Mount adapter that ties into the OEM motor Mount?

I don't have the skills to weld one up myself....

I been thinking on turning a geo into an all electric vehicle. If you do offer a full kit ill be buying. Heck might start buying the adapter plates. Keep this thread going!

Sorry I missed this thread guys. I have a motor mount kit as seen in the 93 in my signature available, but it is for mounting an ac 35 or ac 50 motor. The kit includes the motor to transmission adapter plate, the clutch hub, and the motor to passenger side frame rail bracket. I understanding the hole pattern on the motor adapter plate is the same as a warp 9 motor, but I am not sure about the warp 8. The ac 35 and ac 50 motors are 8 inch motors as well, so the kit may work for yours as well.
