Two little ones are cam and crank seals. On the accessory side of the engine. The foam is for your timing belt cover.
Great thanks,

Am I the only one to get the oil pan on and while waiting for the RTV to set look around and realize that the oil pick up is sitting on the bench? :smackface

I haven't used any oil other than what I'm planning to use for the life of the engine for break for the last 20 years.

Even for first fire? :hmm You know, the start for the first time, bring up to temp, shut it down, drain oil, new filter, re-fill, and go take a drive? :news

I go through 16 quarts in the first 500 miles. First fire, change, "the drive", change, 100 miles, change, 500 miles change and then drive happily the next 3000. :drivin Or maybe that's a little excessive. :hmm
Yup. Even for the first fire. What goes in the hydraulic units of the lifters stays there more or less forever.

Purolator PureONE filters are 99.9% efficient. They're the "Roach Hotels" for engine oil contaminants. :thumb

the only filter i use. they are damn good. # 20195

i use mobil one high mileage 10w30 because it is a lot easier to find than the fancy stuff. the fancy stuff goes into the miata :P

I came VERY close to doing that last week...I also almost put the engine and trans together before I installed the flywheel and torque converter :smackface

So I got the new engine in and turned over but wouldn't fire. After searching the forums found out I had the plug wires back wards. Changed that and it would only start if the distributor is rotated all the way towards the passenger compartment, not sure if that is advanced or retarded. If my cam sprocket is off one tooth, which direction do I rotate the sprocket, clockwise or counterclockwise?

Before you go and tear off your timing belt cover to see if you have a tooth off, I have the same concern reguarding the dizzy being cranked all the way to the firewall. My G10 runs well, but for a couple of years I've been scratching my head wondering if I am off a tooth. I haven't had the guts to ask the question, but since you have, I will say, run it for a while and see how it performs. While you are testing it, somebody with a lot of knowledge will chime in and answer the question. Maybe run a tank of gas through it and get a baseline on mpg's. Then if you do decide to move the timing belt a tooth, you can see how well that helped/hurt the mpg's.

Just remember that the distributor will follow the cam so if the distributor is rotated all the way back to get it to run then rotate the cam (and the distributor) forward.

:hmm Does that make sense?

We'll see how it all turns out. :popcorn

As the story goes, and I like to say, if it's not broken, don't fix it.

I have a list of favorite engine parts. I use 11 different parts vendors and 2 machine shops for my engine overhauls. There is no kit on my favorites list.

Apex has a nice rear main seal kit. They also have nice camshaft and crankshaft seals. I have not mentioned that in my favorites. The greatest majority of the crankshaft and camshaft seals available are significantly acceptable for installation and long service life.

I trend against recommendations to not use certain vendor products.

Also, I have not tried all of the engine products from all of the vendors. When I find a high quality product, I share my experience. Balancing quality with the right price is the objective.

A Little update.

Glenn I would like to say right off the bat, Thank You, it was our conversation and your suggestion to try switching heads to get a few more miles out of the car that really encouraged me to jump in and see what happens. Things didn't work out as planned but I'm more than happy and glad I got the chance to do a re-freshening of the motor.

I went thru my 1st tank but didn't write down the mileage so I don't have any mileage information. Currently about halfway thru my second tank, yes I put a lot of miles on the car.

After I got the car running and warmed up and I went out and drove it like I stole it, to get the rings set well. Now I'm just driving like normal, although it is hard to not roll that throttle on now and then. the car runs SO much better. I didn't know what they should run like and what I thought was normal was so lacking in any power. The car now is a kick in the pants to drive. Since I have a long block sitting in the shop I'm really tempted to go for a more robust build and so what these little motors can do, but we will see if that happens.

I did get the engine gasket kit from parts dinosaur.com, it had everything and since the new water pump and main seal came with gaskets i now have extras. I'm pretty happy and would get it again.

I will update this as soon as I have some mileage to report. i still believe that I'm off one tooth on the timing belt, and my CDO is kicking in and I will be changing that to see if I get a boast in performance or mileage, if not I can always put it back.

Thanks for watching,
Dennis

CDO = just like OCD but the letters are in Alphabetical order, as they should be. :lol
