Hey guys. Trying to keep up with the small issues that seem to come and go.

After 18 months of ownership this has happened maybe 5 times. I'll shut the engine off and there will be a little run on. Today the engine ran on and when I thought it was done it chugged one more time PLUS I heard a fading beeping sound just after the last chug. This symptom might go away in a day or two but is that fading beeping sound a low battery issue? Car starts up fine and all electronics work.......

Recent back history...possible causes??
1-No CEL light for this symptom. (bulb works cause I see it upon start up with the other lights)
2-Cleaned out EGR 2 weeks ago. (residual carbon bits clogging some line) ????
3-Changed oil with Mobil 1, 10w30 plus Mobil oil filter (special at Autozone)
4-Recently used Synchromesh gear oil in case after draining old oil.
5-160 miles since on this tank of 87 octane.

Any ideas? Thanks.

ive heard about this on other cars, some of them run great, but right when you turn it off, its like a beep sound?
im trying to figure out wha tit is for someone else as well.
there car doesnt run on after shutting it off, this must be some kind of pressure release or something from somewhere huh?
it sounds like the beep a multimeter makes when its shutting off automatically to save the batteries.
only there car makes one beep.
hmmmmm
anyone else out there gotta beep sound?
hmmmm

In 18 months it's happened about 5 times. Otherwise just a little run on but no fading beep.

Thanks for chiming in Old Man. Not sure if you're asking a question or making a comment.

When you wrote...."no 'run on' but continuous beeping til I take the key out"

are you saying you have the same problem and when you take the key out the beeping stops?

I never have any "run on". If I turn the engine off without taking the key out I have a continuous beeping. The beeping stops when I have the engine off and remove the key.

run on is carbon build up on pistons...hot enough to burn....check for a leaky injector

old man is making a funny here guys, he means he left the key in with the engine off.
anyway, anyone else heard of the little "beep" when you shut ther car off?
im trying to fix it for another membefr on here, it does it pretty constantly.
its the weirdest thing, there shouldnt be anything beeping in this car from under the hood?
reall weird, but must be something to do with a solenoid or transducer or something?
hmmmm

I was all set to record a video with sound with my cell phone and post it here. I arrive in the parking lot of Home Depot and I start recording before I shut off the engine and it did NOT do it...minor run on and NO fading beep. I was all proud cause I predicted that it might just go away and it did. I leave Home Depot and arrive home 15 minutes later and shut off the engine and again minor run on and NO fading beep. I decide to look under the hood just for curiosity.....and I see antifreeze all over the place. I look at the radiator and it's full so I did not lose much. I found the pinhole in one of the narrower hoses and replaced it.....very interesting. After the hose was replaced and some coolant added everything seems to be ok.

I've felt recently that my city fuel economy sucks and first and second gear are a bit sluggish. Also, upon starting the engine almost without fail I hear that hum in the rear right corner which is the fuel pump engaging BUT sometimes there is non hum.....that fuel pump is about 18 months old. Should it be so intermittent? Should it hum or not when starting the engine? Could a bad fuel pump affect

Regarding the leaky injector, how do I check that?

Is your door fitting the frame correctly? The chime reminds me of a bad door chime. Pull the door plunger out ( the tab on the door frame which makes you interior light come on and off when the door is opened and closed) and clean it. Hey, it might be a long shot, but it can't hurt anything.

Interesting theory but I doubt it. Let me describe the sound in more detail. Have you ever had a balloon full of air and slowly released the air by manipulating the flow of air with your fingers? At first the sound is strong but towards the last 3 seconds of air remaining the sound fades and is very feeble. That's the sound. It's not a strong beep, it's a wimpering, continuous, deflating type of beep.

Have you ever heard a door chime when the battery is running out of juice? Has about the same symptoms as what you are describing.

Just for kicks and grins, check out your battery and see if it has a full 12v charge. Maybe it is in it's death throws and somehow is causing the door chime to sound "whimpy". I ain't saying this is the solution to your problem, only it might be. If it has absolutely nothing to do with what you are describing, then nothing lost except a voltage read across the terminals of your battery. Thirty seconds of your time and no cost. That is what we like at GMF, quick, easy and free fixes. :D

I'll check it. As you say costs nothing. Battery is 18 months old....

thats not it, if the battery was in that condition you would know.......the "jumper cable requirement" would be a give away.

the sound described would be a tiny cooling system leak, engine stops......whine and hises for a few moments untill pressure drops slightly. then quite.

have a assisstant turn key on run position.....watch fuel injector tip for a few "drips" if so...then give a good cleaning, its leaky.

another possibility.....hows your injector spray pattern? perfect cone? or defective windex bottle.
the intake manifold is heated with coolent......a poor spray pattern will cause fuel to puddle on the intake manifold....you shut off engine......fuel left evaporating in intake manifold can keep a car running for a few seconds....what ignites the fuel?....hot carbon build up. you notice how theres some slight knocking during the run on?......thats preignition happening

Hanuman......I'm a bit of a newbie but I think I can handle cleaning the fuel injector.....

A few stupid questions.
1-Does my 90 Metro have only one fuel injector?(I think it does but I need assurance)
2-Where is it located? (I think I saw it on a You Tube video but I need confirmation)
3-About cleaning it? (I've seen a few You Tube videos about home made injector cleaning with Brake cleaner and a AA battery connected to the injector)
Is that what were talking about?

Thanks.
