brand new timing belt, fuel filter and i drilled a hole in the cat to make sure that wasnt it. (I dont care, Ill get a new cat :-/ ) I hear the fuel pump kick in when I turn the key. It was running fine then it started losing power the last couple of trips to town. I couldnt accelerate without it bogging down. So now it wont start. It sounds kinda funny when I turn it over. Sounds like the timing is off, but I already checked the timing three different times and that isnt it. Can somebody give me some insight, better yet, the solution? :banghead

3 things required for go-go. spark fuel air. if you got fuel psi spark and good airflow it should go. typical of these to lose compression. thats the first thing i check when im not sure. if your compression is less than 100 per cyl chances are it wont start. im working on one now that had 75-0-60 psi and it was a no start. the dude says he got it to run by pushing it up to 35 and dropping it into gear. most likely rings and valves are in your future.

thanks sfiend. I dont know how to check that, nor do I know how to fix. Hopefully there is a step by step on here to check compression and fix it, if that is it.

it ran rough before, now it won't start after the new timing belt?

please be more specific about the 'funny sound'

i'd check spark 1st (free), then check for fuel (free but makes your hands smell), then compression (rent one at Oreilly or Autozone - free when you return tool).

You say it was running fine and then started bogging down. Was it running fine before you done the timing belt or did the bogging down start after you replaced the timing belt? I suggest connecting a fuel pressure gauge to it and see what the fuel pressure is. Did you remove the spark plug wires for any reason?

What size engine do you have? Do you have the hydrolic lifters in all 3 cylinders or are there mechanical lifters like in some 4 cylinder models.

If you have the hydrolic lifters then they might no be working correctly. If that is the case, your compression numbers will be off. That means you might have to crack open the head and take a peak at the lifters...................................

thanks guys! Let me summarize. Back in Nov I replaced timing belt. It ran really good. Lst month I decided to change oil seals. Cam, crank, and dist o ring. Started right up and ran wonderfully for approx 500 miles. All of a sudden while I am driving, I begin to notice power loss when I try to accelerate. I push down the pedal and it bogs down. I drove it 1 more trip to town after that. Next day it would not start. When I turn it over, It sounds a little different. Almost like it jumped time, but It didn't. I Put another brand new timing belt on just in case; changed fuel filter. Thats where I am 3cyl 1.0 B-)

Changed seals? That means the crank sprocket was off, correct? The key and crankshaft keyway can be and likely is, damaged from not tightening the sprocket properly and using threadlocker compound. This will not show up as out of time when you check the sprockets and belt. It is however a cam timing issue. Both sprockets and the belt are moving in this case relative to the crankshaft.

Do you have a slight knock and does the crankshaft pulley appear to be wobbling? This is a VERY common problem.

Check the compression before you throw any more money into it. It may have had a piece of a valve or two break off. It's very common with these engines.
