Don't go up in oil weight unless your engine is on its last legs and burning a ton of oil and you want to just limp it along until you replace or rebuild it. You will stick the lifters open and burn the valves with thicker oil. Now you CAN use 5W40 or 0W40. I personally run the Mobil 1 0W40 Euro spec which is considered a very "thin" 40W when hot.

You might also want to see when the timing belt and water pump were changed, if ever. Other than this, look for oil leaks, give it a tune-up, flush the coolant, replace vacuum lines if needed, and such. These cars are SUPER EASY to work on and that is one thing I love about them. It doesn't matter if you are changing the oil or the entire engine. It isn't a big deal either way!

The Haynes manual advises 3.5 quarts approximately and top up as needed from there. A quick Google search says 3.7 quarts with filter. I'd stick with the 5W30 stuff myself. And don't skimp on the cost of the filter... it's like a mattress or a pair of shoes, not something to cheap out on. Use review sites to find a brand that tickles your fancy.

Oil drain plug torque specs are 33-35 ftlbs if you have a torque wrench. Also, if you're somewhat mechanically inclined, take a look with a flash light through your oil fill cap and see what it looks like. You can tell a lot about the history of your car's maintenance based on what the spark plug tips and cylinder head look like.

Seafoam is good for a maintenance on a good motor, but dumping it into an old carboned up motor can do more harm than good. At this stage I would suggest a compression test to see what you are working with.

Welcome to your new forum, 97GEODRIVER! :coffee

And you might try Mobil 1 in a 5W30 if you can get it at $25/5 quarts at Wal-Mart. I use it and my engines love it. If your compression is good then I'd definitely use it.

The 0W40 European spec Mobil 1 is the same exact price as the 5W30 at Wal-Mart and it seems that those such as Geo Glenn and MWebb suggest this over the standard 5W30. While the 5W30 does meet the Dexos1 specs and is a good oil, the 0W40 meets all the more stringent ACEA specs and is even better! This is a steal at $25 when compared to the price of the other oils meeting the same criteria.

I just recently noticed the 0W40 flavor at my Wal-Mart recently. I had looked in the past and it wasn't available so I don't know if this is available at all Wal-Marts yet.
