So Im trying to figure out how this oil rings are meant to be installed. New NPR pistons and rings, I know flat ring>wavy>flat ring but the question is on the wave ring on the inside of it the wave ridges stick up more, and are tight to the piston slot. Are the flat rings meant to rest on edge/lip of the inside ridges? or meant to set flat against the piston itself, past all the waves...? I think the first one is right but the gap in the rings is pretty big and looks like when I compress them the rings may bend/break all to hell because there is no where for the ring to compress to but into the wave and bend, what Im trying to avoid here

The wavy part goes on first. Then the other two seat into the Oil Ring Rail (the wavy one). With the exhaust side of the piston down, piston arrow pointing left, the Oil Ring Rail (wavy) is at 6 o'clock. The Oil Rings are at about 4 o'clock (first oil ring) & 10 o'clock (second or very bottom oil ring). The top, or first, compression ring is at about 2 o'clock. The second compression ring is at about 8 o'clock. Then everything is staggered nicely. Information was taken directly from my 91 FSM.

Oil them up good when you get ready to compress them to install them. The wavy ring will be snug to the piston and the two flats will compress with the ring compressor. The whole set should rotate freely after you install them. You can tell when you have the flats where they should be. |

That video will give you the idea of how to do the oil rings but he didn't even get them close to being lined up to where they need to be. I always put them in the proper location to start with so I don't have to try and get them to turn to where they should be. Also the guy calls them cylinder rings . They're piston rings. Ken....... |
