Installing pistons on rods; Metro pistons

A lot of people attempt to press pistons on rods using a press. This usually at the best leaves a piston that does not move freely and at worst bust your pistons. The correct and best way is to use a rod heater. Your pistons are loose on the rods after installed and you do not run the risk of busting your pistons. I suggest letting a machine shop put your pistons on if your changing pistons. They can install your pistons on the rods for just a few dollars and it will be done right. Call them as ask them if they have a electric rod heater to install pistons with and how much they would charge you to do it. I myself steer clear of any method that involves pressing. I have attempted the press method and done a few successfully but nothing near as good as a job done with a rod heater. Here is a rod heater,

I bought the Kent-Moore service tools for piston pin removal and installation that are listed in the Factory Service Manual.

My machine shop has a permanent parking spot for them in a box on a shelf.

$10 per piston. First time, every time. Never a problem.

If any of the Forum members want it done right, I'll take them to the shop for $10 each and the price of return shipping. A set of 3 or 4 pistons will fit in a USPS Medium Flat Rate Box.

You should fire your local machine shop if they cannot even install pistons on rods. ^o)
