Hi again every one.
95
1.3 auto

My geo runs great but it has 110 dry and 115 wet psi and there is oil coming up settling in my air box above the throttle body. Not sure how oil get there. Blow by????

Why do I have oil above my throttle body?

Any ways I was at the junk yard and they have 2 engines. a 96 which look like mine and a 98 which has the same block 13b but it appears to have a different head. 98 engine has 96XXX

Basically I can pull the either engine and get it for $175 or so for block and head only.

I should be able to swap engine or just swap blocks as I believe my rings are worn in my current engine. How ever I am looking for a way to run a compression check on the junk yard engines. If the timing belt is on it then I can rotate the crank with my socket however if the belt is off is there any way to test the compression?

My plan is to run my current engine till it quits and I kinda would like to have a ready swap available for when it dies.

1. rebuild when dies $100 for new rings and gaskets but know condition of engine

0r

2. 175 for another engine plus $40 for gaskets if I did a head swap. but would be ready to drop in when my current engine dies.

175 sound like a good price to me for an engine if it works. What is a normal price for a used engine?

just putting my thoughts out there. Doing a subaru ej25d rebuild right now and I am positive a geo rebuild would be 10 times easier and cheaper :) thanks

the head is your problem, geo's love to burn valves.
pm member geoglenn for the best information. he rebuilds to factory "new" specs and is highly respected around here.

Oil coming up through the breather is bad rings or a PCV issue. Those low compression numbers point to an issue as well as the oil in the air cleaner housing. That sounds like rings. Yes, you will probably burn the valves soon with that amount of oil burning. I don't know if the G13 is quite as bad but the G10 is notorious.

Don't expect to spend $100 on a quality rebuild. They tend to cost more than that. I would look for a good used motor if you can. I would save that $100 and keep driving this one.

Buy a used low mileage jdm engine.

take a timing belt with you-- do a compression check -- take it home and have it ready for a 'swap out' -- when you swap out then rebuild the original and have a really good one ready to go in.

oil in the air filter housing indicates lots of blowby plus a dirty PCV and hoses.

Thanks for the replys. The blowby I was think was ring related but I was thinking my head was good. I will have to look into the head and pvc.

Will have to get me an timing belt to take with next time I go to the yard

okay, im going with rings and head gasket and 400 grit sand paper hone job.
a sucky rebuild for sure, but better than whay u have and u can do it with block in car. 100 dollar is pushing it even as is.

if you want to do a good job, buy a second motor and rebuild it the right way, slowly. then drop in.

or u could pay some one here to do a proper rebuild.

i took the first option. (was burning/spitting a quart ever 300 miles highway)

edit: i did:
ebay rings, 30
main bearings, 30
rod bearings, 25
ring compressor, 10
cleaners, 50
ebay gasker, 25
oil change, 20
oil gasket, 15??
yellow paint to see oil leaks, 14

still need thrust washers.
ebay had a thrust washer, main, rod bearings for 35 ish. my motor is stock NA, so not rea high stressed.

Anything you do to an engine will make it run better. For how long? Who knows.

A quick and dirty overhaul (service industry term) will most likely decrease your oil consumption.

$30 for a set of EVE piston rings from Ebay.

$50 for a head gasket.

$15 for other gaskets and sealants, as required.

There is nothing quick about putting rings in an engine while it's in the car.

Be very clean while working. One little flake of debris in the engine oil will screw up the bearing surfaces on the crankshaft and camshaft.
