I have 97 3 cyl. hatchback stick shift and I've changed starters in it once and had to go underneath to remove it. I need to change it again as it's an Autozone rebuilt which is starting to fail and I have brand new Mitzubishi starter to go in. My question is, is there an easier way to change it without going underneath? |

With the engine out of the car its pretty easy. Other than that, do it from the bottom. |

...but feel free to try. If you can disconnect a few hoses up above, between the Throttle Body and EVAP canister you might be able to pull it out the top. Either way disconnect the batter first.

I just did one last night. Take the small bolt that holds the speedo cable out and pull the whole thing up and out of the way. Now the starter can wiggled around to pull it out on the drivers side of the engine. You may have to bend some heater hoses out of the way but it does fit. Ken......... |

But not easier. The key word here is easier. |

I have swapped engines a couple times so removing the starter was one of the first steps of that process. Mine is a 1994 and there were a couple bolts or nuts that hold it in place on the firewall side of the engine. I don't know how different the 1997 is but this was really quick and easy on mine. You remove two mounting bolts and then some nuts that hold the wires to the starter. I think I just used a 12mm socket and maybe an extension to get to the mounting bolts or nuts, then held it in position while I removed the wires. Hang on to that old starter as a possible core return in the future. Conor |

I did mine from the top and it was a piece of cake, but that was the SOHC 16V, all the intake plumbing goes over toward the passenger side, plus no EGR or distributor. |

Okay Ken, that sounds like the way to go and I'll do it today. I think I'll remove and plug off at least one of the heater hoses and that should do it for clearance. I'll take that Autozone starter back and get a replacement or get my money back as I think this NOS Mitsubishi starter will outlive the engine. thanks again for the info. |
