Just did a compression check of my 1995 1.0L today. Numbers are 135 110 125. This is after I replaced spark plugs, wires, cap/rotor, fuel filter, cleaned EGR valve. Changed oil and filter, added MMO in oil, drove 800 miles and changed oil and filter again to full synthetic. I tried to smog the car last Friday (in CA) and it failed horribly (even with a bottle of Guaruntee To Pass). So today i learned my catalytic converter is bad (mechanic and I put a heat gun on it and the cat is not heating up at all) and those compression numbers. Is it time for a full rebuild of the motor? My best mileage so far is 37 MPG. Odometer reads 190,000. Just bought this car 1 month ago at a tow yard. |

Those are pretty low numbers. Did you do the test with wide open throttle? Was the engine up to operating temp? |

Just talked to the mechanic. He did a dry test. Cranked motor over 10 times each cylinder with the compression gauge, and did 20 times on the low cylinder. |

Ask him if he had the motor up to operating temp, and ask him if he held the throttle wide open. If he says no to either one, he did it wrong. Make him do it again, or better yet, do it yourself if you can. |
