fuel line broke; rusty lines

has anybody tried to get the fuel lines that run across the fuel tank and turn down to the rubber lines at the filter? workin on a car for a friend and decided to take it apon myself to change the knarly fuel filter. i pulled on the rubber line at the top of the filter and ever so slightly bent the rusty line that turns a 90 and runs up and across the fuel tank to the sender\pump. and wouldnt you know its back togeather and the dam thing leaks fuel. got it down to a slow drip instead of spraying everywhere. but cant let it leave like that in good consience. when i had the tank out of the 4 door i cut the rusty lines back far enough to clean metal and ran rubber lines to the corresponding steel ones on the body. but that involves pulling the tank and a shit ton more work than i wanted to get into. i guess if i replaced the lines i would have to pull the tank anyway. back to my question for this topic should i just cut the steel lines on top of the tank in the not rusty section of line and run rubber line and go with that, or try to get a replacement line set for the gas tank sender? and does anybody have these lines for the gas tank laying around? :banghead :die :bs :kitteh

Replacement hard lines are not available in the State of Ohio. Or, Illinois, Indiana, or Missouri, or any other State that uses chemicals to kill Geo Metros for ice and snow control. I'm sure that someone will gladly harvest your required parts (for a fee, of course) from one of the rust free donor cars that are abundantly available in the States of Oregon and Washington at any one of several Pick-n-Pulls. :whistle

The proper way to address your issue is:

Dear Geo Metro Forum,

I never believed your stories were true, until it happened to me . . . :news

Sincerely yours,

Rusty :cheers

:O :lol :D :x

No need trying to beg out of a pain in the ass job on the forum. Get yourself a can of PB Penetrant Blaster, a Tetanus booster shot, and go to work.

There is a 99% chance that your fuel tank is full. This is usually the way it works out when you need to remove the fuel tank.

Disconnect the battery negative cable. Not that I ever disconnected the battery to pull a fuel tank, but I would hate to hear about a mushroom cloud over Lima, Ohio that originated from the smoking hole where you and your Metro used to live.

There is a small rubber connector on the other end of that metal pipe. While you're in there, replace the 6mm metal return line with a rubber hose, also. Or, wait until you discover the fuel leak in the return line, and pull the tank, again.

5/16" for the feed line, 1/4" for the return line. There's another style of hose clamp that treats the rubber hoses more gently than your standard worm clamp also. They're in the same area with the hose clamps at the auto parts store. Five feet of each size hose will be enough to do the job and have enough left over for something else.

Suprisingly either the tank is on e or the gauge is broke. i think its empty. i plan to drop the tank enough to access the not so rusty line for both lines and use rubber fuel line like the 4 door i did. just frustrating. its been in the driveway for more than a month. its someone elses metro. i am not workin on some of my personal projects. etc etc. oh well i dont mind. it gets another metro back on the road and i get some $ for the work.

I even went a step further and covered the hoses with split loom convoluted tubing. :gamerz

Made for a pretty tight fit, but is working great. :thumb I double clamped the tank lines. ^o)

The extra green wire, wrong color but it's what I had at the time, is a ground jumper. My gauge was wacky too. Rust had compromised the ground. The jumper cured it for now. :cheers

the dude stopped by yesterday and we took a short drive. couldnt go very far the tag is expired. he was happy. it idles smooth and runs so well. you dont have to drive with 2 feet to keep it running. im gonna fix the fuel line now. and then weld the exhaust resonator on to the pipe. after i rinse off the fuel with some water. dont want my project go boom. then im giving it back.

If it was a 4 door, I still have a full set of brake/fuel lines that go from the front all the way to the back of the car... Rust free :D Lol
