Anybody ever thought of using a 2005-2006 Canadian Smart CDI diesel in a Metro? These 3 cyl engines get like 70mpg in the smart car so one would think it would do even better in the lighter, more aerodynamic metro. |

It would seem to work if the suspension would handle the weight and torque. The Canadian Smart fortwo CDI is rated for around 49 mpg city / 69 mpg highway. Not sure how or if that differs from the US Mercedes diesel, but a friend of mine sold his metro for one and was disappointed when he consistently got less than 50 highway and only around 38 city... take that for what it's worth. He didn't like the extra cash for the fuel either. He sold it and got a newer VW Golf TDI so he could be stylin and haul more people. he seems happy now |

No. The best place for a 2005-2006 Canadian Smart CDI diesel engine is in the Smart Car.

it might be a fun project if you could source one from a wrecked turboDiesel Smartcar 450 model. Like any Diesel transplant project, Diesel into a gas powered car, the challenge is gearing for the low rpm to make the most out of the Diesel's efficiency... our 5spd has the tallest (that I know of) available final drive of 3.52, which with 13" dia tires (22") works out to 55mph at 2250rpms, almost the shift point for that Diesel engine. What you'd really want is a 2.98 or so final drive, for cruising at closer to the engine's 'sweet spot' of only 1900rpms @55mph. |

Or maybe some BIG tires... 24" or more. It would be nice if they would just come off it already and sell little diesel cars in the US. |

no kidding... The pessimist inside me says: As soon as the EPA and Big Oil can figure out how to over regulate and over clean Diesels to the point where they only get about 35mpg, will we see them become mainstream in the US
