They can also be cleaned out. A LOT of airflow through the PCV into the intake manifold points to a leaking gasket somewhere - the PCV valve itself doesn't provide a whole lot of flow restriction, and what happens if that hose has a free flow of air is that the intake draws in too much air just as any vacuum leak will. It can also suck oil right out of the valve cover. Normally, the only flow you should have is what blows past the pistons and rings. The main thing the valve does is prevent backfires from going into the valve cover and possibly igniting crank case gasses. |
