Hi guys, I've been having issues with my geo metro. Its a 1995 manual, and its my first car. I've had it since January and its ran great until the past couple of weeks. I've been having issues with it accelerating, I changed the fuel filter and noticed quite a bit of a difference but still having significant issues. I'm suspecting fuel pump next, but want to hear other thoughts. Symptoms: Going into 1st gear it comes really close to stalling out every time, I have to rev it to 5-6,000 RPM to get it slightly above coasting speed coming off the clutch. Forget about it if I'm on a slightly uphill slope or a hill. I feel like it loses speed quicker the more I press down on the pedal, but if I keep light pressure on the pedal it has a tendency to at least maintain speed or periodically gives me quite a bit of acceleration. I don't feel safe driving it anywhere because I can barely make it across a median. On Saturday when it got really bad before I changed the fuel filter I was on I-95 and it wouldn't accelerate past 45mph no matter what gear it was in. I had to pull over, shut it off, and try again. The only way I was able to maintain speed of 65mph was if I stayed in 3rd gear but if I hit a slightly uphill part in the road, I'd start rapidly losing speed. After changing the fuel filter I'm able to shift at lower RPMs, but the car will never tuck its butt under you and go. I feel like I would be going faster if I had my feet through the floor boards running Fred Flintstone style... The fuel filter I replaced was really bad off. I could barely blow any air through it even AFTER blowing it out with an air compressor to try and clean it temporarily until the new one came in. Could the bad fuel filter done damage to my fuel pump? and does anyone know if the fuel pump on my 1995 Geo Metro 4 door sedan is in the gas tank or out of it? Thanks in advanced..

Let's see....You have a 4/5 and it doesn't wanna get up and go. Hmmmm...fuel filter helped but it did not cure the problem. Two things come to mind, one of which old man touched upon. The clutch is slipping and needs to be hit with some sand paper to give it grip. The other is to do a compression test on the cylinders and see if you might need a topend rebuild. My vote is to do a compression test. It is free if you have a compression tester, and even if you don't you can borrow one from a parts store like Autozone. How many miles on the engine? |

The fact that you say it goes better when you barely press the pedal kind of make me think the catalytic converter could be stopped up

139,000 miles are on it. the acceleration issue kind of slowly crept up.. It wasn't an instant thing, it was a course of almost 2 weeks before reaching this point. |

yes--adjust your clutch. from your description of high rpms to get it to move means you have toasted it. |
