Well I have added a metro head to the bunch, my buddy just bought one and he's becoming more obsessed with it than I am. He sold his Saturn for a metro with AC an automatic more miles than the Saturn and he loves it. I am jelly of his car, Arizona lived metro with ZERO!!!! Rust to be had....I mean none. It's been garaged and lived in Arizona. Clean metro. |

Thought about doing this myself. Lots of metros and swifts rolling around my neck of the woods. Keep waiting for one with a for sale sign. As for trading my Blue Steak in for a "new" car, not gonna happen. Leadfoot

I never knew there was a Metro community until I found this website. Most people drive their cars until they tire of them, then trade out. A lot of people don't work on their cars either, so need never go hunting advise on repair except to find a good shop. While I have always enjoyed my Metros (a new 1990, used 92, 94, and 96, and a new 98), I thought the 98 would be my last. But the 98 still runs, and runs well. It is starting to rust, but nothing has been compromised yet and action in the next year or two might preserve the metal for another couple of decades or more. Except for the shot nylon wiper transmission bushing (jury-rigged five years ago and for some inexplicable reason is still holding together with what was expected to be a very temporary patch) I have been able to buy the parts it has needed, but we don't have junk yards in our town so there is no access to used parts unless I come across a donor vehicle (and then I'd have to listen to my wife gripe about a carcass in our yard). My plan was to sell the Metro before it became a reliability issue, and move on. In that light, any vehicle over ten years old is immediately suspect, especially those kept outdoors in a rain forest. So I've been keeping pace with new automotive trends these past few years, waiting for a car that would make a good replacement for my Metro. About the closest thing I've found is an electric Chevy Spark, but it's going to be a few years before the price on EVs come down to the point where I can seriously consider switching. And then I ran across my old friend, and she still had her convertible (she bought it virtually new), and she was ready to sell, and I didn't even see it or ask my wife before I said yes. My Christmas present to me. My wife (fortunately) approved. Now I have a Metro that I plan to pass on to my children when I'm dead (if it doesn't get wrecked). And since I'm keeping one alive forever, is it really that much harder to immortalize two? So here I am, member 15,294. If I need used parts, I hope I can count on some of you. |

Every time I am able to speak with a metro owner my conversation immediately goes over to this forum. Most people straight up ignore me, only a few have listened... It's like I am giving you a free tool to prolong the life of your car and you don't care?

I have been thru this before...... In 1975 when I was 16 my first car was a 1965 Corvair. Had at least a dozen of em over the next 15 years. Some daily drivers, stripped some for parts, some easy fixes and a quick resale too. (Talk about EASY to work on) Gradually they got more scarce, harder to find parts and never really ever went up in value. I wish I had kept my last one....a 66 Turbo Corsa! |

The Metro was developed in the 80s when gasoline was cheap, but came on the US market as fuel prices were declining - these little cars were kind of an oddball to most buyers. I worked at GM in '84-85 when the first of the G10 motors were sold in the US. Some GM engineers told me they were impressed with the little motor, but the average buyer only saw the little car as cheap. I like what I like and don't care that others react as if I were driving a Rambler when 7 liter V8s were cool. |

People are moving on to new cars? This is my NEW car! My '00 Metro (14 years old) is still 10+ years newer than any other car I've owned. |

What really frosts my ass is when somebody takes a perfectly good car and parts it out just to make a buck. G-r-r-r-r!

I'm glad I'm not the only one. I bring home parts I don't even need every time I'm at the junkyard (and half the time I don't even know what they are). I've saved the old non-working ones too, just in case something could be done somewhere down the road. If I had room to store a spare engine and transmission, I totally would. |

I spotted a Metro on the parking lot of a repair shop/car lot near my place so had to pull in and ask the guy. He said it is some guy's from Wyoming and it broke down going down the highway by the repair shop so that is where it ended up. The clutch disc and springs decided to separate and go their own ways so that was that. Anyway, they guy had a new clutch put in but hadn't been able to come back and get it just yet. The mechanic said it only ran on two cylinders and had low compression in the #2 cylinder but the owner didn't care about that. Of course we all know this is a burnt valve. How far can you run one of these only running on 2 cylinders? I would think you are just washing down that bad cylinder and making a rebuild harder in the future by running one like this for an extended time such as the drive from Wyoming to Missouri. Either way, the guy had it repaired and wanted to keep it going so that is good. Conor Edited by cwatkin, Jul 8 2016, 11:21 PM.
