Radio digital display brightness; Tired old eyes.

My daughters metro radio jams good. At night the radio will illuminate except for the digital display in the red box to allow you to see your station change. Or so I thought. I never could see it. I went out and snapped a picture and low and behold, it shows in the picture that it is working. It must be so dim the naked eye does not pick it up well. I was going to ask if anyone has had success getting this display to work but now I guess I need to know if there is anyway to make it brighter so you can see it. The dash lamp dimmer only controls the radio illuination lamps, not the station identification display. Any thoughts?

My Ford Focus does the same thing. At night when you turn the headlights on the radio lights dim. All internal control in the radio.
Don't know if its the same inside your unit. Something to look for tho.

Yea there should be a wire that senses when the headlights are on. Cut it. Should be blue and white wire

I cranked up the car and turned the radio on, got real close to the radio and could barely see the numbers but they were lit up. I turned the lights on and same thing. Now when you turn the lights on the panel lights come on but the station numbers stay the same. I am wondering if some button on the radio controls the station number brightness. If so I have not found it. Here is what the schematic looks like for the radio. It shows a dimmer control and panel light. Bryan I see nothing the colors you mentioned.

Is your radio harness factory, or did somebody chop it up? Maybe somebody in the past put the wrong wires together? Just saying.

It is original. It lights up, it is just so dim you cannot see it unless you have your face right to it.

For $50 you can get a new radio that plays MP3s @ Walmart. Buy her one for a present!

Lets see,

50 bucks to replace a radio that plays good tunes but you just cant see the station numbers. She can keep fumbling around till she finds the station if that be the case.

I've never found a station that plays good tunes <G>. That is why I suggested one that plays MP3s. I have two CDs in my car (both crammed full of MP3s). These are the only two CDs I have listened to for the past 14 years. Some people (including the voices in my head) would say that is crazy.

That makes sense.

If you cut the dimmer wire, then none of the buttons will light up at night. Trade one problem for another. :smackface

I *think* 00Metro might be right. It may be a bulb, but it will be the solder on, solder off kind. :hmm
I have an old OEM headunit lying around. If I get a chance, I'll pop it open and let you know. ^o)

Do you think it would have more than one bulb? It does show a little bit but it is really dim. You can see the numbers in the red box above, that was with a camera. With the naked eye, the number is hard to see but if you get close enough you can see it. It should be a lot brighter. The dimmer seems to control every other light on the radio but not the digital display.

I would think the little light you can see might be bleeding thru from the button lights.

The button lights will dim with the dimmer, the digital display stays the same just dim all the time.
