I broke down and took it to a shop I had a good experience with in the past. Here is the breakdown... my compression was 180 on all cylinders, but my rings are leaking oil into the cylinders with the #1 cylinder being the main culprit it has a nasty scratch in the cylinder wall. So looks like I'm going to need to rebuild the bottom end if I'm going to get the issue sorted out. They quoted me over 1,000 to do the bottom end, so I'm not sure what to do now. I just paid 1,050 to have the head done its a shame for it to go to waste. I have a lot of new parts in it, any thoughts on what I should do? I'm debating wether I should sell it or fix it.

Were the spark plugs oily? Does the car smoke? 180 psi compression and your engine should run without shaking. Unless you are experiencing smoking and oily spark plugs with those compression numbers, I would not tear back into it. Sounds like you need a good mechanic that can go thru everything, making sure all systems function as they should. I suspect with those compression numbers your issue is not internal but external. |

I agree with Big Rhino, 180 compression is great compression for the G10 motor. I got 190 on mine after I rebuilt it a year and a half ago and I think the minimum is 155 if I remember correctly. I will tell you though, if you can turn wrenches at all you're probably going to be better off redoing the bottom end yourself rather than paying someone $1000 to do it. You can tear it down yourself and spend about $300 or so getting your cylinders bored out to get rid of that scratch you were talking about. After that you'll most likely have to get over-sized pistons and rings of course which will cost a little bit but you'll still come out ahead if you do things per manufacturer specs yourself. Anyway, good luck and let us know how it goes! |

It puts out nice clouds of smoke I never noticed because I'm always driving, but its very apparent when you are outside the car. The spark plugs have become oily as well. The #1 cylinder is especially dark and nasty. The mechanic showed me all of the lovely wet oil on top of the pistons with his little camera do hicky down the spark plug hole as well as the scratch. I was confused about how I had such good compression with the oil leaking though. Apparently it didn't do very well in the leak down test however, so I'm not sure what the deal is. The #1 spark plug is def getting some extra oil action now though. |

Decisions, decisions. Unless your going to do the work yourself, it will likely get expensive. If it were me, I would invest in a set of rings and a new head gasket. Jerk the head, pull the oil pan off and knock out the pistons, rering them, measure the cylinders for taper and ridge wear, inspect pistons for cracks and skirt wear. if ok, hone and put it back together. If major wear is found then decide whether it would be worth it to you to jerk the complete engine and have a reputable engine rebuilder build it for you and put it back in. The first is cheap if you do the work yourself and do it right. The second is exspensive and only recommended if the car is in great shape and you think you can drive it long enough to recoup what you will spend on repairs. |

Finally received my long awaited tach in the mail. Not sure if I'll be needing it anymore or not, but everybody likes pictures right? ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Front cover is a little scratched, but I think it would have cleaned up nice or I could have just swapped the one from my old cluster and added a hole for my trip meter. |

Well, I'm going to jump right in and say that I can get your engine problem fixed without a full overhaul. PM me for my phone number. We can talk about it. Thinking about getting "Team Dan-O" involved on this one.

Boy! With compression that high in all the holes, it really leads me to believe that you have a bad valve guide, or a valve stem seal has come loose. Does it smoke all the time, or only at idle? If it smokes all the time then yes, a ring is stuck or damaged. If at idle only, the valve guides are suspect (in my mind). And over a grand to have a head redone? Good Lord! Here in the greater Sacramento area I can get a complete reman'ed long block with a guarantee for 995.
