If any of you remember I've ha issues with this transmission for a while. I'm really tempted to take it out, and explore the workings of it. Take it apart clean it new synchro things bearings and gaskets...it just seems so complex...

the axle stub should go in and "click" into place. they have circular steel wire clips that expand into grooves in the differential to lock them into position.

it also looks to me as if the seal around the shifter shaft is weeping pretty good.

it happens! ;) just be sure that you check the oil level often and add some when required. the first thing to go on these transmissions is 5th gear when they run low on oil. the black stamped steel cover on the end of the gear box has small tube like passages that dribble oil onto the gears for 5th under that cover. when the transmission oil level drops below the holes for those passages the gears run dry, the steel turns blue, and finally the gears explode.

That sounds horrible! I do keep an eye on my trans fluid level and I can tell when it is getting lower than before because the gears get stiff. (3 finger shifts grind) also I fill it using the speedo gear hole. I fill it to the top, no idea how much is in the case because if it's add the top...more oil fits with no over flowing....I fill till it spills. Then I know it's full!

If you look at the pan with oil in it that's how much I took out of the trans. Bout 5 Q

the "churn" of the gears inside the transmission can build enough pressure to blow the seals if you over fill the transmission. they designed it with a suitable volume to hold the oil and an air space.

way too much oil creates internal pressure and makes seals leak.(as t3 said) that is probably why your seals are weeping. Drain it out and install 2 1/2 quarts. don't install the speedo gear yet.

after it sits long enough for the oil to level out observe how far the oil comes up on the speedo shaft/gear. This will be your "full mark". Now you can finish putting the speedo gear back together.

A direct result of one of two things that a young mechanic is usually guilty of:

1--working without a Factory Service Manual cause it cost monies that can be put into frivolous stuff.
or
2--owning a Factory Service Manual but being too hurried or overconfident to take the time to open it.

hmm a FSM would make my life usefull, guess i should print the pages off some where for free and just deal with a 3 ring geo binder. thats actually a good idea i should get a FSM and do a "scrap book" of receipts and other things

The scrapbooks a good idea. I found my FSM used on ebay for $26. Money well spent.

So I got around to doing my Glenn way of a coolant flush. I drained my coolant pulled my hoses because I wanted to replace them with the hoses off the skate, I couldn't use the lower rad hose because it's for an auto trans.

The MT hose has the clamp the AT is the clean one.

Posted Image

There are specs of dirt and stuff in the coolant. It's fairly clean so I saved it and I'll filter it later.

Posted Image

Here is the upper hose the long one is off the skate and the short hose is my car, it's been cut and shortened after a leak so that was the last time for it.

Posted Image

See how long the new hose is? That's nice just incase I need to cut shorten a blow out.

The lower hose was leaking so I made some adjustments to where the rubber meets the metal. Then I used 2 clamps on the lower and upper. Great just incase I ever need a clamp in a "pinch" :lol

So the coolant flush went with a drain of coolant fill with some white vinegar and distilled water. I let it run for a while burped the bubbles filled more let it run then drained it all out. Filled with Distilled water and repeated till it was clean. Filled with 70% water and 30% coolant. No need for thick coolant here.

I don't know.
Sometime, somewhere I was told that one reason for changing the coolant was to get rid of coolant contaminated with acid.
Don't know where the acid could come from, just know that coolant is cheap compared to using coolant contaminated with acid.
I would never "filter and reuse".
