Not so fast

Dang, that sucks. :( How many miles did you have on that motor? 300K maybe? Are you gonna drop in that motor on the side of your work bay for now?

so I removed the head and all the connectors, even tho it was getting dark ive done this so many times I kinda did it by feel almost, the connectors on the back of the manifold what hoses etc. I just know them so well, took a few mins to get it all off. then I went on the lower and removed the 2 nuts that hold the bearings in and pushed the piston out, as I was holding it in my hand it broke, I was not being rough on it just holding it and the large part just fell out. so it was probably just a few pops from completely going grenade.

the bearing has a nice chunk taken out of it and I am not sure if this is from the failure of the piston or what.

and here is the score on the wall where the cracked parts were rubbing along it.

I dont know if its the milleage, your driving style 👌, or just pistons that were not designed for a little abuse. Maybe that piston had a defect?
I am concerned for you wanting to go higher compression, maybe a little would be good, but to much may cause issues right. I had a member tell me he blew up his glenngine going too hi with the compression. Ouch bigtime and that was his second go round with hi compression.
Your planning a 1.3 with your other car right? Maybe that is a better way to go, maybe better than pushing the NA envelope on a g10? Maybe build it for a turbo g10. Whichever way you decide to go I look forward to your updates 👍

You caught it before catastrophic failure, but still a bummer. I know you'll give the red car love and get her back mobile soon.

Bummer about the piston. :smackface I have one of those parked behind the garage right now. :'(

But Wow! :O Nice, clean, engine internals! :thumb

Looks like decent oil, combined with an appropriate drain interval. :news Sometimes, even if you do everything right, things still can happen. :ermm: You'll have it purring again in no time. :cheers

depending on how the block shapes out and make sure the crank is not egg shape or scored. i might be rebuilding the skate engine. im not sure yet, i got to get everything apart and DTM GTi can help me measure the parts to see if everything is within tolerance.

To bad that piston let go. That is one clean engine. Buy a set of forged pistons. Or better yet build a twincam motor

Good catch! I commend you. I suspect that the only thing wrong with that engines pistons was high mileage and repetitive high RPM.

Over the years I have done the same thing a few times.

Enjoying the project thread thanks for the update.

What is usually the cause of piston side skirt cracks? High RPM?

well the best guess is pistons with slots where the rings go instead of oil holes. the making process when they cut into the piston it leaves behind "sharp" edges where a stress fracture can start. where as ones with oil holes each hole has metal around it to keep the skirt strong. Plus when this engine was rebuilt we did not know any better so cheap pistons were used. This failure can probably summed up to

1 cheap pistons
2 slotted skirts
3 higher RPM use than stock
4 heavy use

the pistons i been looking at are the YCP vitara pistons. 75mm teflon skirts. then with the higher compression pistons i am going to use the old GT connecting rods because they are forged and any most of you know i bought the H beam rods for my GT motor. that left me 4 con rods to use. So this g10 will go high compression and forged internals on my still great 3 tec head. the 365/222 cam and stainless valves with the port polish yada yada. this should be a fun combo. bit more pep and way stronger.

depending on how much time i got today i will finish removal of all the parts, i am curious to know if the other pistons are doing the same thing. it was dark outside last night and i didnt get a chance to tear into it to heavy. i only removed that one piston, then made some phone calls. It was probably just stressed from all the abuse i do on my engine, yea i do change my oil and keep it clean and fueld up with good stuff but the internal just could not handle it. As far as i know stock pistons are simmilar to these one that broke, but i bet they are better quality. i do have the white car to drive so i can get this rebuilt and done up sweetness. i have been wanting to build a performance NA car and i guess here is my chance.

so any way I took the engine out of the car and continued to dismantle it and after I had unbolted this it just kinda slipped out of the bore and I thought that was easy compare to the other piston :hmm well guess that is why because the ring is not even doing any thing, how does this even happen I don't even get it.

Posted Image

here is another shot of it

Posted Image

and here you can see the stain from the fuel burn going kinda all over the place in there

Posted Image

and here we are all my pistons have issues the one has a busted skirt, the other has a broken ring spacer, the other piston is really stiff around the wrist pin because it looks like it is cracking around the little oil holes that lube the wrist pin.

Posted Image

now I could not get the bolt un done by hand so I put a mat on the ground to protect my block then I took a dish rag and folded it up into like a thick burrito. I took the rag and placed it inside the block so the crank would get stuck on the folded rag and keep it from moving and it worked very well. I was able to stand on this and get that bolt undone. Next issue was wondering if the dollar store socket wrench that has CHINA stamped all over it would snap on me :doh I thought for sure me jumping on the wrench would ruin it but it held up just fine and ill keep on using it till it takes a crap. its actually one of the best socket wrenches ive ever had, better than my crapsman and better than my stanly, the china wrench has been beast mode
