Wow looks like those rings as they broke up were trying to raise your compression by giving you domed pistons.

I suspect as others have said you were moments away from that motor flying into tiny pieces of Geo-shrapnel! |

Oh tell me about it, I worked so much the last little bit I am super burnt out, with the way I had things going the new promotion I got and the over lap of the other job I had massive massive hours in at work, yea my check was FAT but I didn't work on my cars, don't worry they kicked me out of work the rest of the week for going all the way to 40 hours in a short span. so car play time. Some up date for today however is I installed lights and a computer monitor with keyboard and mouse stand in the shop so I can have PC access outside. the lights are pretty hokey but it works good and I didn't light the house on fire yet so I must have done it correct. |

Dude, I feel your pain believe me. I've been through it. On the other hand you have an opportunity for a nice project there. I didn't know that there were forged pistons and rods available for the G10. Could you point me to where I could find them? Great thread btw. |

i have done a lot of reading and talking to the older folks around here. I THINK forged internals are on the turbo and twin cam cars. I am starting to get the impression that stock not cheapest pistons should hold out just fine. i was kinda looking at these DNJ pistons on rock auto, i have not ordered them yet because i need to get my block measured and figure out what size to go bore out to. The piston that the ring took a crap did the most damage. in a non scientific way you can feel this ridge in the bore that is not there on the other 2 bores. so pretty much i need to order parts and the cylinders need to be all cleaned to match the one thats messed up + clean up. So i kinda changed plans here, i think ill go with some regular pistons (quality) rebuild and drive another 200K till it poops out again. I have a little list of parts i need to order for not just this car but all of my cars, i need transmission axel seals for 2 gearboxes, front crank pulley seal because the white car is leaking and one for the desert car (dirt and oil make a mess) and i need 2 head gaskets, desert car and this car, i also need block studs for my turbo GT. lots goin on for me and plenty of cars to play with

Cool man, I've got (I think) some of those front crank seals from some builds. Also I've got some cylinder head alignment dowels that I made on a Haas TL-1 lathe. I could hook you up cheap (just shipping) if you're interested. Look forward to seeing how the project goes. Keep up the good work.

Ok so after some talking around and figuring what to do, its been decided that I will use the blue cars old engine as a temporary back up engine for the short time, THEN when my engine is done I will take it out and put it in my desert car named "garage queen" but first some things need to be done to it. The head gasket was suspected to be leaking so I decided to take no chance and freshen up this engine so it will run strong now in the red and later in the desert car. ![]() lets get this party started with some pizza, took a frozen pizza, steak flavor thin crust etc, and pumped it up with cheese and extra peperoni. ![]() so with the head off its time to replace that gasket, but some things started to get iffy when the head came off ugh burned exhaust valve and a leaky other valve... so I jumped on the phone to find 3 valves and they are shipping to auto zone should be here Friday, I was kinda upset because I wanted to get this thing going asap, then my dad asked if I had a spare head, I had forgotten about the good head I had bagged up and stashed away safe. ![]() here is the bad head valves, and wow was this head clogged up with carbon in the EGR passages. So now the plan is to use the good head and rebuild this with those valves I ordered so I have a spare head for whatever reason I need In the future ![]() here Is the good spare head my dad gave me a few years ago, I had this head on display in my bed room at my moms house for a long time, don't ask why but I just liked the look of engine parts. ![]() so while I worked on cleaning up the head gasket from the head my dad cleaned off the block, stuffed rags in the passages cleaned it up then use the vac to suck up all the junk out of the cylinders. now wheres that brass check valve ![]() I was working on changing the manifold over from head to good head. It was a very nice day to work in the work shop with no wind and it was not hot at all in the shade at least. So we got pretty far on this engine tonight, used a tap and die set to chase the threads in the block on the bolts and all the other random bolts and nuts around to be ready for assembly. We installed the head gasket and head then I changed the lifters over to the lifters I took out a little bit ago because the lifters in that head were flat and lost the oil from sitting for so long, oiled up the bearings for the cam and silicone in the cam seal. That's where we stopped for the night, more in the morning after some and eggs

![]() So I got very tired of doing the engines by hand, I fight with them and fight with them so while I was fighting this engine I said screw it I am going to harbor freight, and I bought the smallest engine hoist they had, its still way large for what I'm doing, not only does it not fit under my low car its massive. So we used the hoist to take some pressure off the engine and get it mated in the bay with the transmission. ![]() all day working on this car we had little bugs to work out so some cheese crisps were made. ![]() So the engine is running strong and one bug that was a bit scary was it was dripping lots of oil, turned out the oil pump was missing a bolt and had one loose, were unsure of where the bolt went missing but it was gone. we got the coolant bubbles out and we took a drive to Walmart to pick up some oil because its oil change time. you can see the top of my car how much dust has settled on it from sitting for so long, man was it nice to drive my car again. Now that this is up and going again I can take my time and make up another engine, its looking like that engine block may be pretty bad but who knows for sure till I have it measured. Stay tuned because more updates are coming and these ones will be really good
