Yep! That would create a vacuum leak at idle - which wrecks idle performance.... and it makes for not enough advance at higher throttle openings.... So... Both failed - but was there any indication of which way you went from last time? Worse? The more I think of this - the more I kinda lean with Geo Glenn on the suggestion of waiting till January - then claim exemption and be done with it.... No sense throwing a bunch more money and time into this.... Park it - it's only 3 months... Thanks |

CO and NOx went up a bit, but were still within passing by a sizable margin. The only fail was HC Low idle threshold was 275 and result was around 475 (I don't have the paper in front of me) High threshold was I think 500 and result was 537 or so. I have a free test coming to me since I paid for this one $28. Should I retest as is? Or should I go the other direction and advance it further than it was at the start? Throw a cat on that thing and it will pass with no problems or rebuild the engine |

Seafoam down the air intake. use the whole can up and stall it with the last little bit. wait a half hour or so, then go out and beat the piss out of it. it will help with carbon clean up. i swear by the stuff. both mine get treated anually. short of that and makin sure the dizzy's hooked up this time, either rebuild or wait till jan. |

That's what I did! I just registered it online on Jan 2nd! Waiting for the stickers to arrive and the registeration document. In meantime, they gave me a temporary registration to print out. Funny. Back in October, I could not register online until I cleared the emissions test. On Jan 2nd, the car turned 25 years old and is exempt from emissions. When I logged onto my DMV account, I saw that the nice lady who gave me the temperary registration so the car could be driven from MetroSchultz's place in Virginia Beach had listed the car as GARAGED in Virginia Beach! (emissions not required there). There was no way to edit the profile of the vehicle to indicate it is parked in Fairfax County VA which requires emissions. Maybe I should just quit right there and put the tags on and keep my mouth shut! |

I wish they did that here. Out here it's 1975 and older, period. Oh, and I just found out it's really "Engine is 1975 or older", meaning if you put an engine from a newer vehicle into the body, the smog goes with the engine, not the chassis. |

I didn't know engines had a freshness stamp! |

"freshness stamp" = engine id number. for a 1.0 it starts G10, then the next letter will indicate the year. you can compare to the VIN to see if it was changed, if the letters do not match. engine can be changed with same year and be correct letter. probably not worded the best. |

What should have been done is heavier oil in the crank case. As a Geo nut, I own a geo or two from nearly every year. The compression numbers given indicate the typical 3 cylinder geo with high miles or low maintenance by its original owners. Those numbers indicate a partially burnt exhaust valve on #1 cylinder, a starting to burn valve on #2. I have 5 engines sitting in my shop and every one of them have the burnt valve issue. These all came out of cars that ran but died at stops if any load was on such ad the heater fan. A 89 thru 91 geo will get appx. 50 mpg even with burnt valves. A valve job will increase power and smoothness but won't increase economy much. Oil wise, I was taught back in auto college that for .001 additional oil clearance in the rod bearings the oil rings have to scrape 10 times the oil off the cylinder walls. I run 10-30 castrol oil in every thing except the 05 through 97 1.3 liter engine which must NEVER run heavier than 5/30 and in fact my 95 will float the valves if I run anything but FULL Synthetic oil. The valve springs are too weak and is why the 1.3 engine went back to adjustable valves in 1998. |

Virginia does NOT have emissions... I've lived here all my life and I have NEVER had to get ANY of my cars tested for emissions... |

That's a bold statement blanketing an entire state like that. Virginia varies from hillbilly country to inner city. |

Virginia HAS VERY STRICT EMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS for cars in the densely populated areas of Northern Virginia (Arlington and Fairfax counties in particular). It didn't require it in Virginia Beach which is why Metroschultz was not able to get it emissions tested there when he was working on the car. I was granted a waiver since the car is now 25 years old. So I'm driving it now and they gave me the stickers for my plate. I'm going to see if I can improve compression on that 2nd cylinder that's burning oil. Testing out a can of Restore. Will make a different thread of my findings.
