Maybe someone has had this idle problem in the past. Here's an example. When coming to a stop my engine takes several seconds for the idle to come down to normal RPM's. please point me in the right direction.

mine has been doing that for many miles. It has got so bad that when I come to a stop I have to 'tap' the gas pedal to get it to come down to normal. -- don't know about yours but I am sure mine is because the cable needs cleaning and oiling-I've just been to damn lazy to do it this summer. |

Automatic trans or stick? Check engine light on? Does the car warm up to operating temperature on the coolant gauge? |

Address the code 51 and you may solve your idle issue as well. |

It is normal for the engine to take a few moments to idle down. Fixing code 51 will have no effect on this. Fix it anyway. |

Not true, egr can and does effect idle. From stumbling to high idle issues. Geometro253 does your car do this with the ac on and off? I would start by making sure base idle speed is correct with engine hot and all accessories off. You may have a issue with your iac if equipped. Some 94s had them. Repair code 51 before trouibleshooting other issues. A few moments for a hot engine to idle down at stop lights normal?

Just a brief update to this one.... I had the same issue - high high idle rolling up to a stop light... It would "Idle" at 2,000 rpm - fast enough to run the car at 20+ mph in a parking lot without touching the gas pedal.... Unclogging the throttle body coolant lines seemed to help a LOT. Make sure that throttle body feels warm/hot.... If it's not getting plenty of coolant or it's got a bubble stuck up in there - the engine thinks the throttle body is still cold - and runs up the idle a whole bunch... Idle dropped back to more or less normal-ish... Then - my ISC relay finished burning out *all the way*... Hot idle was like 600 rpm.... Replaced it and the idle seems to be dropping back down like it's supposed to and maintaining like it's supposed to.... more or less... I still have an intermittent code 51..... but it feels like I am making progress. Thanks |

I have had 6 Metro's, and every one took a brief moment to idle down. Not one of them went straight to idle speed. |

Not Really All That Smart

When I coast to stops, idle will hover around 1500 before settling back down around 800-900rpms. I've replaced all vacuum lines, flushed the cooling system in both directions, and have meticulously cleaned all ports, nooks, and crannies. It is what it is. Unless the hover number is crazy high, or constantly stays high, I wouldn't worry about it. |

Guys, one of the ways they reduced NOX emissions back then was to use use 2 vacuum lines on the distributor. One for accel (advance) and one for decel (retard). They would purposefully slowly retard the spark after slamming the throttle shut to reduce NOX emissions. So, a brief idle down is normal and the vacuum line for the timing retard is why, but yours is excessive. For giggles, check those two lines because if its bad, it will only make the issue worse. Your car, being a 94 may be much different than my 89, but just give it an eyeball. Edited by Papa_G, Oct 23 2013, 10:14 PM.
