RTV on cam housings........REALLY?!

Maybe I'm reading it wrong but the FSM calls for gasket maker between cam housings 1 & 3 and the cylinder head........WHAT! FSM page# 6A1-20, fig. 47. They use a GM part # but the best I can tell it's gasket maker. Doesn't make sense to me. Someone please clarify. I'm in the middle of reassembly and I'm at a standstill right now!

This is so you don't leak a small amount of oil out of the ends of the engine. I know Geo Glenn always suggests fuel lube or anaerobic gasket sealant (what I have used due to availability at local OReilly). You DO NOT want to get this in the oil relief passages OR the journal itself. Use it VERY sparingly. Just a light coating will do.

Another thing you might do is to round off the corner of the oil passage on the #1 cap. I have seen reference to this here and have done it to two different engines when replacing the cam seal. Both engines have had no more issues with the cam seal leaking. The idea is that this might be a design defect from the factory and one reason these engines are notorious for leaking out of the cam seal under the timing cover. I used a small file.

What Snowfish said.

The application of the sealant on the camshaft bearing caps can not get into the the bearing surface for the camshaft.

The amount that Snowfish has there is actually too much. Enough will barely be visible. Wait, that's my picture. But, anyway, that's just so you can see where it does and doesn't go. I'm using Loctite 515. Loctite 518 will work as well, and is more commonly available.

Ultra-Gray will work, but is has to be so barely visible. You can easily plug the vent passage. If you do, your seal will blow right out.

Also, a very little bit of Ultra-Gray RTV on the edge of the cam seal.

Thanks guys! I used RTV Ultra Black (that's all I have) and spread an oh so light coating on the housing, staying away from the oil passage. Did the same to the cam seal also.

Great post! I am also assembling an engine this weekend and will do this. I totally get how this would be a path for oil leakage but I'm curious why my FSM doesn't say to do this. Different printing? Mine is copyright 1997 with an information cutoff 12/2/98.

My FSM is an earlier version - copyright 1996 info cutoff 7/22/96. Fig 47, pg 6A1-20.

That's interesting, I wonder why they dropped that recommendation. It's on page 6-124 in my book but doesn't say anything about sealant on the mating face. I will do it anyway, can't hurt... unless you goop up that oil relief slot.
